1:49pm: Soccer Chick Rules
As soon as the book starts, you can tell that Dawn Fitzgerald has actually played soccer. Her descriptions of the team's bus rides, scrimmages, and coach/player dynamic are dead-on for school sports. Her descriptions of soccer practice -- including the heading drills on, of course!, muddy days -- are all too real. Beyond the soccer aspect, I really appreciated the way that she worked the not-so-perfect family dynamic into the story as well. I always hated reading books where the siblings were too good to be true, and Tess' brothers are definitely far from perfect! And while there is no mention of dating (which may be just perfect for some of you), there is still a guy in Tess' life -- her best friend Bo. He is also into soccer, and the two of them are working their hearts out for a winning season AND to save the school sports program. That's right! Just like many schools in our area, Tess' school has to pass a levy to raise taxes if they want to keep school sports programs and other extras like extended busing routes. I won't give away the ending (how the vote turns out), but I can say this much: soccer chicks everywhere (including myself) can easily relate to Tess and her love of sliding through the muck for a chance at the perfect score!

Happy Reading!
