7:49pm: The River Between Us
In this historical novel, set during the American Civil War, we hear from two narrators. We start off with Howard Leland Hutchings as he and his brothers travel to Grand Tower, IL -- their father's childhood home. When they arrive and meet the four people who had raised their father, the narrator switches to 15-year-old Tilly Pruit (the boys' grandmother).

When two women get off a steamboat (headed north from New Orleans) and decide to stay in Grand Tower, the Pruitts take them in. Delphine Duval is a high-society girl with fancy dresses and expensive tastes. Calinda is darker skinned girl who accompanies Delphine and often waits on her. Tilly wonders if Calinda could be Delphine's slave, but is afraid to ask. Tilly's twin brother Noah falls in love with Delphine, but soon leaves to join the Union troops. When Noah gets ill, Delphine and Tilly take off to save him (and hope to bring him home as Tilly's mother ordered). They see many horrible things when they reach Camp Defiance, but they still work hard to feed and nurse the soldiers back to good health.

Secret after secret keeps unwrapping in this excellent story of bravery, love, and acceptance. Well worth the read -- and it will probably look good as a book report too!

Happy Reading!
