8:15am: The People of Sparks
Jeanne DuPrau is AWESOME! (And, so are the sound editors for this audiobook production.) I admit that I was a bit ignorant when I chose this title. I didn't realize, until after I got home, that this was the second book -- The City of Ember is first. The great thing is, though, that it didn't matter! This book didn't require prior knowledge and was quite good at "backselling" the necessary information from the first book.

Anyhow... Doon and Lina are determined to save the people of Ember when their city starts dying out. They realize that they need to get to another city, but that required bringing the people of Ember aboveground. (The entire city of Ember was underground!) When they get outside, everything is new to them. They have never seen trees, the sky, the sun, or clouds. They have never experienced rain or wind. When they find the city of Sparks, the people there don't know what to think or believe -- and many actually doubt the stories about an underground city at first. The leaders of that city decide to help the people of Ember, though it will be tough. Another 400 people to feed, house, and clothe?

Tensions grow between the Emberites and the people of Sparks because the food shortages, hard work, and poor living conditions give power-hungry Tick (an Emberite) the opportunity to turn the Emberites against the people of Sparks. After fighting begins, the people of Sparks want the Emberites out, but the Emberites know they are not ready to make in on their own yet. Will the people of Sparks really make the Emberites leave before they are ready to fend for themselves? Will the Emberites fight back or leave? Find out for yourself!

Happy Reading!
