The entry that probably doesn't mean anything to anyone else other than myself [01 Jan 2008|03:59pm]
What a year 2007 has been.

I have never travelled so much within a year before; I started the year off in New York, then Bangkok, Venice, Paris, Valencia, and of course Singapore (three times). Almost went to Netherlands. We have been preaching our clients to offset those carbon footprints, but I obviously don’t walk that talk. Haha. Work has been bittersweet; I thoroughly enjoyed what I was doing, made loads of close friends, but the crazy hours had indeed taken a toll on me and made me realised that I am not as young as I think I am. And those dark cirles and countless wrinkles... (I still prefer to call them laugh lines) Sigh.

On the personal front, I am very lucky and blessed to have my family and loved ones ‘around’ me, and recent events made me realised that life is really transient, and I cannot take everything for granted. I have also had new-found admiration for my mum and her beliefs since the funeral, and have also learnt to be more receptive, and respect my brother (a little bit) more. I am also still learning how not to nag so much, and not to be so self-centred and -opinionated all the time.

My new year resolution
1. take good care of myself and my loved ones
2. be truthful and faithful to myself and others
3. be more careful with how I spend my money
4. do more of my own ‘thing’ when it comes to design (no more ‘getting influenced’!)
5. Stop acting cute and be 27 instead of 17
6. Call home at least once a week and keep my family updated with my life
7. Try not to nag so much
8. Exercise, exercise, exercise!
9. Don’t be lazy and be more organised, no last minute work, less TV
10. Be happy

That’s all I can think of, and I’ll try my best to stick to it. Maybe I will write them down on my new moleskin. Yeah! Alright, have a fabulous new year my dear friends whom I’ve neglected for a while now. Take care and here’s wishing everyone the best of health, prosperity and progress for our nation.

happy mari kita day everyone! [09 Aug 2007|02:00am]
haha, i know its been ages since I've last posted, so i think i'll make a quick posting before i head off to sleep (well, actually i need to finish up NUS dance ensemble poster...)

I've been really really really busy. Let me see what i've been up to recently (not in chronological order) — went venice for art biennale, designed publicity for cake's new show, queued outside borders at midnight for mr potter, melissa came and left, adrian came and left, zihan came and left, shawn came and left, laid out an entire 183-paged magazine in about 10 days, quit my job, got promoted, organised Singapore Wave, developed concept for new mag, helped out in the new identity for my company, went for numerous art/design shows, preparing for London design festival/DesignersBlock... very busy la. can cry.

been packing my room for the past few days, and i realised that i have accumulated alot of junk in the last four years. I have like 3 boxes of tshirts, 3 boxes of other clothes, 1 box trucker caps, 3 huge huge boxful of books, 2 boxes of printing papers, 1 box of flyers which i dunno why i am keeping, 1 box of cables and computer stuff, and thats only like half of my room packed. sianz. if i am rich i will pay for something to come pack for me, while i try to read finish my harry potter.

time flies man... cant imagine that i've been here for almost 4 years now. gasp. kinda sad leaving my tiny room, but happy also la. haha. in fact, despite being extremely busy recently, i've been really happy. (yes jianhao, me happy le! haha)

hope all my friends back home are enjoying their national day holiday.

on a separate note...

a*mei got new album! and she's having concert in sg! tamade. i feel damn out of touch with mandarin pop. i wanna watch 881 too! brian or junfeng, can do a musical for yr next feature? i volunteer to dance for free! i miss performing too la, actually. been going for dance classes at pineapple studios here, and even though some of the girls are super flexible and amazing technique, they are damn slow at picking steps and lack the ra-ra factor. maybe i should upgrade a bit and go for more difficult classes.

everyone is raving about dim sum and happy endings, but i didnt get to watch it at all. :(

alright, enuff rambling. its 2am and i need to .z.z.z.

See the laundry in the machine. It goes round and round.
See your reflection in the glass you are a great sad clown.
Hello Mister. Hello Miss. Where are you off to now?
May I join you on your way into the great abyss?
I won't say a single word or get in your way
I'll just be a companion. Grey.
It will be a grand nothing day.
Say yes. Say.

Hello people,

The lovely folks at Cake are opening their 2007 Season with Nothing.

Nothing is an exploration of urban alienation. Written and directed by Natalie Hennedige, and performed by Goh Guat Kian, Nora Samosir, Rizman Putra, Peter Sau & Siti Khalijah, the talented cast will play multiple characters, some entirely identifiable, some obscure, some mundane, some elusive to create a poignant, meditative and funny tapestry of the human condition in the midst of urban frantic and noise. It will employ electronic music and noise and a stark stylish set as well original and found text.

and of course, multimedia and set by BRIAN G T!!!!!

Do show some love and get your tickets from www.sistic.com.sg NOW!

glued. [04 Apr 2007|12:56am]

I almost forgot that I've bought a ticket for Glue, an argentine film by alexis dos santos which was showing here as part of the programme for the london lesbian and gay film fest. Got my ticket a couple of weeks back, when I went to BFI to see Ryoichi Kurakawa's performance during the optronica festival. So yes, I flipped through the catalogue then, and being a visual person that i am, i didn't read through the synopsis la. marked out a few interesting films (or should i say pictures) but all those that i wanted (there's this film about some gay choir thing which i really wanted to see) was all sold out, except for glue. There's just something about this picture of a boy, eyes closed, and wearing his headphones that intrigued me (no, no, nothing to do with YBF), briefly read through the synopsis... adolescent sexual experimentation, yah dah yah dah.. seemed interesting enough , so I bought a ticket for it.

Was chatting to adrian online on sun about his life as a teacher and films and dvds and stuff, and thankfully through the conversation, i remembered that i've actually bought a ticket for glue. Went for it after work last night, wasn't expecting anything much, but wow, was it a good film or wat.

ok, i have to confess i love pretty things. the cinematography was excellent, and the interesting use of hues (colour balance lean towards the cyan and yellow, think yellow skintones, turquoise sky) really emphasize the soaring heat of Patagonia, this little town in argentina (?) where the film was shot. Have not seen such a beautifully shot film in a really long time.

Storyline wise, i can't help but draw comparison with royston tan's 15, coz both film are of those angsty coming of age films where it wasnt scripted and solely improvised. the Q&A session with alexis at the end of the screening really shed alot of insights into the filming and editing process.

okie, enuff about glue.

I've been on a dvd-buying frenzy of late, having bought like almost 1 or 2 dvds every night for the past week or so. last night i bought clean, the film starring maggi cheung, wwhich she won the best actresses during cannes a few years back. and moments ago, i've bought 2 dvds of this collection of award-winning shorts from sundance, berlin, bafta etc etc. Can't wait to go back sg and throw a dvd party (but i noe most prob i will end up watching alone la. or lending my dvds out. haha)

film is the next big thing in sg la. so, for those out there doing film/script/cinematography/set-design (almost everyone reading my blog la, i think), don't forget me when u get famous k? (if u aren't famous oreeady)

1. I am pathetic without internet. The internet connection at home has been coming on and off for the last week or so. Called up virgin technical helpline, and after 30 mins on the phone resetting my modem, checking my cable etc. they couldn't detect anything wrong with my settings or modem, and suspect that 'the fault lies with the grey box outside your flat'. So yeah, have to wait till the cows come home before anything will get sorted. I so hate UK's inefficiency.

2. Someone must go and invent/design/create some online retail satisfaction. I just blew almost £100 online buying 3 books off amazon and subscribingto Grafik magazine, but i still didn't get any shiokness out of it. I want immediate gratification!

3. did i just type 'the internet connection at home' in 1? do i consider this shithole at kings cross, where i have been staying for the past 3 plus years 'home'?

4. I am so tired of work. Really feel like going back to school again. I need to start doing my own stuff. Perhaps I should get for myself a new toy… (new digital slr? haha!)

5. My room is in a terrible mess. It's days like these when I really appreciate my mum. Hmm… must make a mental note to call home (sg) tomorrow.

6. Went for a lovely hour-long jog this morning coz it was all bright, sunny, blue sky and all. +10 poinds

7. Just ate up my baking disaster — an entire bowl of brownie (was supposed to be muffin, but I put in wayyyy too much milk) -20 points

8. Must save up for my MA. No more fancy dinners and foot-long posh pizza hor! if only chopchop give me loyalty card…

9. After my msn conversation with robin just now, I suddenly feel like performing, even though i am not at all good at it. perhaps i should go to the gym's street dance class on tues (and be the only thorn amongst the roses. hur hur)

10. Just handwashed my lovely grey h&m merino wool sweater which i got from nyc, and discovered a big big hole at the side. heart pain sia. must go buy new one!

11. opps. forgot about pt 8. must save up for MA.

Painkiller for My Foreign Body [27 Feb 2007|11:21pm]
Brian and Zihan ah, your films coming to london never tell me go support! But of course la, I heard about it (from the lovely folks of SIF), and even help u both publicize on www.scnuk.blogspot.com le. haha. (so kelong right? only use shots from both yr films, haha). So happy, can watch it again on proper screen this sun (instead of youtube or super-slow NTU server). Will be asking my sg jing gang to go down support also!

I went down to photographers gallery on Sun to look-see the Deutsche börse photography prize 07, and was seriously blown away by this year's nominees, esp the works by Fiona Tan and Philippe Chancel. Wa, this french Philippe guy managed to get to North Korea and did a series titled DPRK — super zai. I have seen his works in books before, but the actual prints looks super surreal and clinical and 100 times better under its thick perspex frame. Visit www.philippechancel.com to see more of his work. (go under portfolio>DPRK)

The above print (taken during Kim Jong Il bd celebration? or its national day?) reminded me of an old poster my brother had on the wall of my old flat. He got the poster as a souvenir when he took part in some Jubilee Singapore (Singapore Jubilee? dunno la) event at National stadium, where he was one of the thousands of TK tech boys behind the mass display. hmm.. I am quite sure the feature on North Korea in this month's issue of wallpaper* is also shot by him. Check it out!

And when I saw this print during the exhibition, it just reminded me of a photo my sister took during her PAP kindergarden days!

Singapore very the North Korean hor? Very clinical, orderly, even sterile, but nice le, I like. :)

time of the year… [23 Jan 2007|11:48pm]
It's my time of the year to look back at the past one year and…contemplate. hehe.

The past year was bitter sweet la, I suppose. full of hits and misses. Finally graduated from sch even though I hardly did any schoolwork, and was lucky enough to land a job at a reputable company. good pay, fun colleagues, can't complain. Been toying with the idea of heading back to school to get my MA though, but until I earn enough, I shall just keep toying with the thought. Love life, haven't had much luck last year, so will work on it.

Been feeling bad for choosing to go nyc instead of heading back home over christmas. Oh well…

Zaki called me out of the blue today and asked me if I am going back Singapore anytime soon. "dunno le" I replied. Coz I really dunno. Was all prepared to head back home until I got the job offer, and I took it as a sign to stay. But now, I dunno. To stay or to go back, guess that will be my question for 2007.

I miss my parents and my sister alot. And my friends too.

While slaving my afternoon away in my studio today, I took mental time off to think about what some of my friends are doing, and weird images came into my mind. Stacy wearing her Marc Jacobs at work and bummed into Justin Timberlake, Jh taking his top off at St James (even though I have never been there), Brian & Joe camping (with tent and campfire and all) at 72-13 (7123? 7312??) with uncle B and auntie G making out in the same tent, Mel dashing from ward to ward with his hankie, Nat meeting Rain, Zaini buying mascara at Guardian and the cashier turned out to be his ex student, Vince buying a 2B mechanical pencil at Bras Basah, David cleaning his wedgewood at his office panty, Andy in his rugby suit and american accent, Mel and Luke gossipping about me at Siglap, Nic buying new hamster cage at this pet store at boon kheng, Titan, Adrian (Hua), Jane and Juli all on the same flight and sharing makeup tips, Cy and Aaron eating at food court opposite SMU, Mr Jian giving a plastic smile to some china tourists at some counter at Orchard, Mindy and Huii running after a Kate Spade bag and a pair of nine west shoes. And got alot more that I just can't remember now la. weird la. weird. And then I had to attend some meeting and missed jh's call. Wanted to tell him about my weird images I had of him but couldn;'t. :P

So yah la. I guess I am a lil' home sick now. And I miss dancing!

Okie winter is finally here in london, so I shall climb into bed and anticipate the arrival of the big two sex…i mean, two six. :P

eva [04 Nov 2006|06:54pm]
Eva Marie Cassidy (February 2, 1963 in Oxon Hill, Maryland – November 2, 1996 in Bowie, Maryland) was an American vocalist described by the British newspaper The Guardian as "one of the greatest voices of her generation." She had a diverse repertoire of jazz, blues, folk, gospel and pop. Cassidy remained virtually unknown outside of her native Washington, DC, when she died of melanoma in 1996. However, her posthumously released recordings have since sold in excess of four million copies, and in early 2001 the compilation album Songbird reached #1 on the UK album charts. — from Wikipedia
