'My Corduroyed Life' - Mark A's Journal

19th July, 2007. 1:59 pm. You were poked by Mark Adams. poke back/ remove poke

It will never stop amusing me…

Ah, internet fads! There’s always something that is the ‘next big thing’ on the internet. And there is always something that was a big thing for a while that has faded into mediocrity.

Gaydar
Faceparty
Out In The UK
Myspace
Manhunt
&c, &c

And the latest is, of course, Facebook.

As I accumulate personal profile after personal profile on the internet (I dread the day that my Dad types ‘kingghidorah123’ into Google!), my tongue goes further and further into my cheek. When you set up one of these things, you just know that you’ll hardly use it within 6 months. Yet you make a stupid amount of effort to make your profile look good and ensuring that what you write makes you look witty and cool. And then you recruit your friends to the next big thing and you end wasting obscene amounts of time on this fad. As such I have been as daft as I possibly could on my facebook profile.

Yes, you do reconnect with old friends and keep in touch. Yes, you do have more contact with people than if it wasn’t there and this makes you smile. Yes, it’s all very lovely. But it really isn’t a substitute for meeting your mates up the pub or having them round for a cup of tea. In my opinion, these websites actually sap your real human contact rather than increase it.

But that’s not what this blog is about. This blog is about poking. Poking on facebook is daft and silly and amuses me every time I do it. It is a fun and silly facility that tells a mate that you’d like to poke them. There are few people who I would actually prod with my index finger in real life, but the idea of a virtual poke amuses me immensely because I’m so very very childish. I’ve poked everyone from my boyfriend to a mate from back in Wolverhampton to a mate up here to the Technician from my work to, well, everyone I’ve got as a facebook friend. It amuses me. It’s a cute little feature that adds a little bit of character to what is essentially something I’ve done many times before.

Who knows, just because I can poke people, Facebook may prove not to be a fad and I’ll stick with it forever unlike moribund services such as Myspace and gaydar. But somehow, I doubt it. However, until then… Poke!

Have fun,

M x
