'My Corduroyed Life' - Mark A's Journal

14th April, 2007. 12:04 pm. Top Friends.

This was originally a myspace bulletin written when drunk. I actually quite liked it, so I've reposted it here...

For those of you not on myspace, a brief explanation: myspace encourages you to link your profile to people that you know, and then you can (if you choose) subsequently rank them in order of who is your best mate downwards. I find this crass, yet I still did it. There is something quite freaky about myspace, but that's a post for another time (and another half a bottle of vodka!).

Hi

I'm a bit drunk. Okay, a lot drunk. As such, this may be frighteningly profound, or a complete load of drivel.

I'm finding myspace a petty place right now. Or at least, my overanalysis of myspace and it's quirks is making me petty.

I'm starting to resent this 'top friends' thing on myspace. Surely it's all just a tiny wee bit too honest?! A tiny wee bit too serious for a website that is essentially not much better than email yet stangely compelling?!

Is anyone actually completely honest about who they value the most in their top friends? And indeed, should they be?!

Should one put one's family over one's partner and/ or best mate? Should one automatically assume one's partner is one's best friend? Is it an insult to put someone you've never met over someone you socialise with in person? What if someone you hardly know (and/ or don't have in your top friends) has you as their no. 1 top friend? What's most important: a friend who is a confidante, or a friend who you can rely on to get you pissed on a night out? Where the hell should you put your exes who know your deepest darkest secrets, but have never actually seen you when you're completely relaxed and comfortable? For that matter, Where the hell should you put your exes who know your deepest darkest secrets who HAVE actually seen you when you're completely relaxed and comfortable? Should you fib to save someone's feelings? Should you give a shit if your number one friend doesn't have you as their number one friend?

Is it actually possible to accurately 'rank' the people in one's life by importance? If it is, why the fuck would you actually want to do it?!

Another thought: should this have been a blog instead of a bulletin...

Myspace is evil.

I love you wherever you are on my top friends! ;)
