'My Corduroyed Life' - Mark A's Journal

5th February, 2006. 4:02 pm. I Was Going To

But I'm not...

I was going to write a huge ranty blog about the current Fundamentalists V Denmark thing. But what's the point? These people who are burning Danish flags, beating Danes, torching Danish embassies, &c are not real Muslims. The Muslims I know aren't violent nutters; they're not particularly chuffed with the Prophet being depicted in cartoons, but they are peaceful people.

Have devout Christians behaved like this when Jesus has been charicatured? No. I am an atheist, and some of the mocking cartoons of evolution by Creationalists are pretty disgusting, but do I go burn American flags or beat up Creationalists? No. What gives these vicious, hateful people the right to do this? This isn't simply isn't fair on the vast majority of moderate, average Muslims who see the actions of these fundamentalists tarnishing the image of their faith.

Another thing that has particularly angered me is that the BBC think it's okay to show images of Danish flags burning, but won't actually show the original cartoons. So the BBC are basically saying they're not scared of upsetting Danes, but they are scared of upsetting fundamentalist muslims. This is a very scary situation when the British Broadcasting Corporation is effectively censored by a group of potentially violent religious bigots.

I was going to, but I'm not. So I'm going to stop writing now.
