'My Corduroyed Life' - Mark A's Journal

5th December, 2005. 7:54 am. Monthly Review - November 2005

Where did my year go?! How can it possibly be December?!

WORK
Anyone who isn’t at the exhausted stage of wishing away the weeks to their Christmas break is a better person than I am. I am plodding along, but really need to recharge my batteries.

JOB HUNTING
Will start over next year…

MONEY
With the build up to Christmas including much social events and present buyage, my finance are a bit woo to say the least. I can already see the unavoidable overtime in January looming.

LOVE LIFE
Seeing as Tracy always reads this and reports back to him, I would like to say that Rob is lovely, snuggley, beautiful, and wonderful (and also tiny). Much to my dismay, I’m not actually lying there…

NINJA
The build up to my brown belt in the middle of December is now starting to scare me. I worry about my ability, I worry about my endurance, but most of all I am actually worried about my fitness. This time next month I’ll have a brown belt or my tail between my legs.

HEALTH
I’m convinced that the cold weather makes me need more sleep. I am just permanently tired. It’s rubbish.

BOOKS
I thoroughly enjoyed Jennifer Government by Max Barry: a biting and intelligent satire with great action thrown in. I am now reading and enjoying Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, and so far my only whinge is that the hardbackness of my copy makes it difficult to travel with.

MUSICA
I went to see Rico early in the month, and they were wonderful. They are regularly compared to NIN and in my opinion, deservedly so. I think I actually prefer them to NIN. Surprise of the night though was the support group, who were a local band called Deviant UK. They came on and blared out a mish mash of 80’s retro, Goth, Electronica, technorock, crazy shit that I thought was absolutely bloody wonderful (I summed them up as ‘Evil Pet Shop Boys’). There are some downloads on their site, why not have a listen?
Later in the month, I saw The Prodigy at the MEN. The gig was so good that on more than one occasion I got so caught up in the emotion of seeing my favourite band that I nearly cried. Not a single person was sat in their seat and the whole arena was dancing! The crowd was huge, and I can’t emphasise what an amazing gig it was! So I say pshaw to those who said they didn’t want to go and/ or said the band was passé.
In other news, I have added much music to my music collection via rippage, this includes Buffy the Musical…

FILM

Straw Dogs
I can see why this was banned: eeeek! Ambiguous rape scene! However, the ambiguous rape scene is essential to the plot of what is a good film once it’s gets going from its slow start.
***

Seed of Chucky
A fun film that anyone who enjoyed Bride will also enjoy, but it’s not the comedy genius that Bride was. Fans only, I suppose.
***

Saved
An interesting and enjoyable slap round the face of Christianity by exposing just how ridiculous it is through comedy. Slow in some parts, but still a thoroughly enjoyable film.
****

Friday 13th – Part 2
Hehe! Irritating, characterless characters getting killed brutally – excellent. Particularly enjoyable schlocky fun with some delightfully amusing deaths.

TELLY

Alias - Season 3
Flawless! Gripping from start to finish, and just generally bloomin’ great. Loved it!
*****

Survivors - Series 2
There was some horribly hammy acting, and some truly superb acting: the stark contrast made it easier to notice the ham. A couple of storylines were lame, and despite the loss of the main character, the series somehow managed to be compelling and interesting.
****

The Book Group - Series 2
With only six episodes and a huge amount of story arc, the series felt rushed. Also, the beauty of the first series was its emphasis on the actual book they were reading that week, that was ignored because there wasn’t time. However, it doesn’t alter the fact that it was a very good programme.
****

Miss Marple: A Murder Is Announced
These were all very lovely, and enjoyable Miss Marple’s, and I hope they make some more.

RPG AND GAMING
Ars Magica has been a little slow due to people not being able to make the sessions. I am really looking forward to next week when we kick off again (but I’m also thinking we’ll have problems around Christmas too). Phee is running the next session, after Oli ran one where my companion, Jose, died. I was gutted! He has, however, been replaced by Jakob who is a troubadour and is very cute. I am looking forward to playing him. I have also prepped up a fun session for Ars that I’ll hopefully be able to run soon.
World of Warcraft is still as addictive as crack, and I’ve got Santu up to level 55 and Pizzak up to 34. I am still absolutely loving the game too.
Pixie is restarting a Sunday night D&D session, and I have created a halforc monk called Kung Chi for that.

BLOGGING & T’INTERNET
Take a look at this. The phenomenon that is house bling has just got even more competitive by the looks of things. It’s a scary, scary thing!
I’ve been a lazy git and not posted many blogs this month, but I personally think that the church sign thing is one of my best blogs ever.

BLOGROLL
Geeks galore! Here are the blogs I regularly read:

Alley Katt
Bowch
Big Fat Man
fishmonger malarky
Gribble The Munchkin
Monkeys and Pirates
Microsatellite
Nathaniel Westbury
Picture of Flowers
Pickled Pixie
Prince Gaz
Shooting Parrots

ANYTHING ELSE INTERESTING?
Well, my car got stolen, which has put something of a downer on pretty much everything. I am currently distracted by the thoughts of what I can’t do any more, what I have lost, and how it’s damaged my potential time with Rob.
My bro came to visit on the last weekend and we went to the International Market and the Village, and we had much fun.

THE WHOLE MONTH IN A FEW WORDS
This was another one that was so quickly ‘cos I was having fun, but has suddenly been ruined by the theft of my car.

Have fun,

M x
