'My Corduroyed Life' - Mark A's Journal

1st September, 2005. 12:48 pm. Monthly Review - August 2005

Oh dear… By the time you read the next one of these, I’ll be 27.

WORK
Meh – tolerable, with some happy spells when certain members of staff I dislike haven’t been in.

JOB HUNTING
Been busy! Leave me alone!

MONEY
August is always a horribly expensive month due to all the events within. I haven’t done too badly, but have had to dip into savings. I’m also slowly but surely selling my tat on evilbay and making a little bit of money.

LOVE LIFE
As you know, Rob and I got engaged. Could things actually be any better?

NINJA
Simply put: must try harder!

HEALTH
I’m feeling a little run down due to everything that’s happened this month. I really don’t seem to have had any mong time to catch up sleep or just chill. Coupled with a complete lack of exercise, and not a fit boy am I. Hay fever is calming down though, which is a small mercy.

BOOKS
Racked with guilt over reading HP in a matter of two weeks, and not reading the book that Rob gave me for Christmas yet, I resolved to read it. I still haven’t finished chapter 1. All the reading I’ve done this month has basically been RPG sourcebooks…

MUSICA
Hmmm… No real new music to speak of apart from my free Wax Planet demo CD from the artists formerly known as Naked Lounge avec new singer. It was fab by the way – in fact, I guess I should do a review really (adds to the ever increasing ‘to do’ list).
I also saw Hazell Dean live in concert over the Pride weekend! Yay!

FILM
Not had much time for film this month, but Rob keeps insisting on putting me in front of old Agatha Christie films. Did manage to get to the cinema twice though.

Murder On The Orient Express
Albert Finney was a great Poirot – shame he only did one film. I so didn’t get it right.
****

Evil Under The Sun
Sir Peter Usinov, although not quite as fab as Albert Finney, was a good Poirot (but I was slightly put off by his size – I kinda picture Poirot as a small penguin like man, but that may be David Suchet’s fault). I so didn’t get it right.
***

Death On The Nile
Another Ustinov, and another fun film. Who da man?! Who got it right!!! I am well clever, I am.
***

Kung Fu Hustle
Hilarious comedy martial arts extravaganza. Loved it.
*****

Cradle of Fear
British schlock with lots of lovely gore. Particularly good for people who might consider themselves ‘goths’ as it features the guy from Cradle of Filth as it’s baddie.
***

The Devil’s Rejects
Rob Zombie is great: great music, great image, and great director/ writer. This was a suitably gory splatterfest in the vein of 70’s B movies with a hint of wry self-awareness. Superb film… Altho I can’t help thinking I’d have preferred a new album from Rob instead.
****

Serenity
As is the Firefly film that aint out yet?! Oh hell yeah! Lalalalalalalalalala! Two things: big thanks to mcphee for getting the tickets for us, and wow, wow, wow, wow, wow! Superb Sci-Fi film that I have to see again and again! Worked very well inasmuch as fans of the telly series will love it, and it is also okay for the new viewer explaining what needs to be explained. I laughed, I cried, I cheered, I left VERY happy.
*****

TELLY
Not really had much time for telly either! I’m also halfway through about five different telly series at the mo too.

Agatha Christie’s Marple: The Body In The Library
Another fun romp – this is proving to be a Miss Marple well worth seeing.
***

Press Gang - Series 1
Recommended by a mate who said it was something he’d watch today, I had high hopes. Sadly, I felt it was a bit kiddie, full of 80s kid stereotypes, and some of the acting was cringeworthy. It did however improve with time, and the latter episodes improved a bit.
**

Survivors - Series 1
Dark and interesting Speculative Fiction that I thoroughly enjoyed… But I couldn’t help thinking that it was Day of the Triffids without the triffids.

RPG AND GAMING
My WoW addiction is still going strong, and I’ve been playing a number of alts as well as Santu. Santu has mainly been grinding to be honest.
Ars is going great, and I am enjoying it more and more. My magus, Santiago, has finished his first major project (learning corpus magic and making his own longevity potion) after five seasons work, and has also managed to learn a spell for the benefit of the covenant (yay!). My companion, José, has managed to duff some people up, and get so old he has a limp (bah!). Oli has run it so far, but I’m hopefully gonna run a session or two at some point to give him a rest.

BLOGGING & T’INTERNET
Blatantly nicked from Bowch is this fabulous Crazy Bendy Woman. Also, I can't for the lofe of me remember who sent me the Lust For Bust game, but that's hilarious too.

Blog wise, I’ve done more than previous months, and have loads of ideas, but it’s all about finding time!

BLOGROLL
I’ve added another blogger to my blogroll. Have a look at Backstage Mike’s blog if you get the chance: he’s an old mate from Wolvey. As well as adding Mike, I’ve separated Ed out from ‘blurty friends’ as he is by far the most frequent blogger (apart from Shooting Parrots) that I know.

Alley Katt
Bowch
Ed
fishmonger malarky
mcphee
Microsatellite
Picture of Flowers
Pixie
Prince Gaz
Shooting Parrots
Blurty Friends (a number of bloggers that are on blurty)

ANYTHING ELSE INTERESTING?
Well… yeah!
Have had three major weekends over the month: the Madhouse Minicon, Keith and Sharon’s wedding (I was best man!), and
Manchester Pride. I am hoping to do big blogs on all these things, but am waiting on photos (that’s the excuse, and I’m sticking to it!). All three were amazing events for different reasons, but all involved seeing great, great friends.

THE WHOLE MONTH IN A FEW WORDS
Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
(That was just one word actually!)

Have fun,

M x
