'My Corduroyed Life' - Mark A's Journal

15th June, 2005. 2:23 pm. ECW, ECW, ECW!

This... Is Extreme!

It's not very often that I blog about wrestling. In fact, you could probably count the occasions on one hand. I know a lot of wrestling fans read this blog, but there never really seems to be anything inspiring to write about these days. I could write about stuff I'd already written on wrestling forums (those in the know will, for example, remember The Jaguar's Claws), but what would be the point considering that my opinions haven't changed? I could review the Pay Per Views of the WWE, but how many times can you write the word disappointing? I could state my favourite wrestlers and champion their ability, but we all know that Shawn Michaels is my Wrestling God. I could whinge about the state of WWE and its talentless wrestlers, but who wants to actually see words such as Snitsky, Masters or Morgan, let alone read about those wastes of airtime?

Realistically, how many people actually want to read about professional wrestling?

But I'm here now, gagging to write about wrestling. Something has got me excited. Something has fueled my passion for the squared circle so much that it's overflowed into writing. And believe me, with the general tosh the WWE have been throwing out recently, that is no mean feat.

I am, of course talking about ECW: One Night Stand. I recently got my hands on a tape of the event that ran last weekend, and it was with a sense of great glee and anticipation, coupled with dread, that I put it in the VCR. I loved ECW and to see the stars back together for one more PPV, I was looking forward to it, but couldn’t help fearing that as it was completely funded by WWE that they might well ruin it with invasion angles or too much corporate crap or goodness knows what piss poor angle. So I was both greatly anticipating and dreading the event.

The event was the best I have seen very a very, very long time. It was simply a superb and exciting wrestling card that shone from beginning to end. Not only that, but it completely lived up to the ECW legacy and incorporated everything that made ECW great. There was the technical wrestling, the acrobatic luce libre wrestling, the crazy bumps, the innovative weaponry, and the tongue in cheek attitude to the business. There was everything.

The bookers kept the ‘WWE invaders’ away from the ring until the very end, and only really used them to push Paul Heyman and Rob Van Dam’s promos down in the ring: good choice. The bookers made sure that the matches were all perfect pairings who had had superb bouts with each other before: good choice. The bookers didn’t scrimp on who they invited, and pretty much anyone who was anyone in ECW (that isn’t currently contracted to TNA) was a part of the event: good choice. The smooth move was to book the actually talented guys to be in the ring, and to have the less talented wrestlers just being there adding to the atmosphere: good choice.

All in all, I was over the moon with the event. A truly enjoyable three hours showcasing the best that ECW had to offer and allowing this ECW fan an evening of nostalgia.

Have fun,

M x

Do you remember a while back when I blogged about Microsatellite, my mate Huw's band? If you remember, I said that Microsatellite were very, very good. Well, Microsatellite are taking it up a notch and have their own website and blog. The Microsatellite website has a blog, a band profile, and sample music. In my opinion, Microsatellite are fantastic, and you should check them out.
