7th June, 2005. 4:35 pm. Monthly Review - May 2005

Like water through my fingers, another month flows by…

Really, really doesn’t feel like a month since I last did one of these… and that’s a week into this month!

WORK
Nothing’s changed.

JOB HUNTING
I have failed in my New Year’s Revolution for those keeping track. Who the hell actually keeps them anyway?

MONEY
Yuck!

LOVE LIFE
It was very weird having Rob meet my parents. I never really thought that I would get into the stage where I would be able to tell my parents about it, let alone have them meet someone. It went well, and they seemed to like each other, so all is good.

NINJA
I’m slowly starting to gain confidence in my ability as a Ninja, and do actually believe I deserve my current grade now. I still don’t think I’m fit enough to take my brown belt grading, but we’ll soon see, eh?

HEALTH
Hay fever is a bitch, but the bint in the Quack’s surgery is even more of one! I get grim hay fever over the spring and summer which basically gives me constantly itchy eyes and a constantly runny nose, and makes me sneezey and generally puts me in a foul mood. However, if I take my tablets, the symptoms all but disappear unless the pollen count is in orbit. However, with no tablets and an early start to hay fever season earlier this month, I was in a particularly foul mood when some jobsworth bint snowed me with quack bureaucracy. I basically ended up having to actually go to the surgery twice, fill in forms, and deal with moody bints just to get a repeat prescription. Apparently, if you don’t repeat a prescription within 6 months, it’s no longer a repeat prescription: YOU DON’T GET HAY FEVER IN THE AUTUMN AND WINTER, YOU BLOODY JOBSWORTH! Can you see she frustrated me?!

BOOKS
Moving swiftly on…

MUSICA
I’ve mainly been listening to old stuff this month as I am slowly but surely copying all my CDs to my hard drive, except for the new NIN album with is absolutely amazing! My friend Nick has just leant me a whole load of surreal and chilled stuff, so I plan a good consume of those over the next few weeks.

FILM
Only seen one film on DVD this month, and no independent or International films - I am slipping just watching all this Hollywood...

The Punisher
Perfectly passable action thriller based on a really cool comic character.
***

Leprechaun
I absolutely LOVED this film! The perfect schlock! Stupid and plotless concept, with silly bad guy. Amusing deaths, and poor poor acting. Also, embarrassing first film for top star (J Aniston). Exactly what I wanted from an 18 film called Leprechaun!
*****

Kingdom of Heaven
Hmm. I am trying not be biased because I wouldn't want to give my Orlando a bad review. Thing is that this film was a bit meh: not atrocious, but really nothing much to write home about. Also, there wasn't enough Orlando nudity for my liking.
**

Monster In Law
Surprisingly good Romantic Comedy that I enjoyed more than I'd like to admit. Bridget Fonda utterly steals the show as the monster, and the fit guy from Alias is in it.
***

Star Wars – Episode 3: The Revenge of the Sith
The best of the new three by far! This covered everything, and answered everything. The only little niggle is the shockingly bad love scenes… But this is more than made up for by the wonderful action/ lightsaber scenes.
****

TELLY
More fabulous Who, plus other stuff…

Doctor Who - Dalek
Initially, I was mortified that the idea had been stolen from Big Finish’s 6th Doctor story, Jubilee, but then I discovered it was adapted by the original writer, so that’s okay. A truly wonderful episode, and the Dalek’s new badassness only made him more scary.
*****

Doctor Who - The Long Game
Doctor Who with Simon Pegg in: can you really ask for anything more culty? Pegg stole the show, and this was a really enjoyable story too.
*****

Doctor Who - Father’s Day
I wasn’t so sure about this episode – for some reason it seemed to grate. Ropey CGI didn’t help. Still worth a watch though.
***

Doctor Who - The Empty Child
Good grief! I nearly wet myself! How scary?! Superb, superb spine chilling stuff! The best episode yet, and a cliffhanger ending too!
*****

Doctor Who - The Doctor Dances
Superb! Part two of this adventure didn’t disappoint either! Wonderful stuff – and the gooey ending didn’t grate either for some reason!
*****

Ally McBeal - Season 2
Another season of perfectly passable throwaway telly that displays touches of genius.
***

RPG AND GAMING
My main character in World of Warcraft, Santu, is up to the dizzy heights of level 37. It used to be that an evening’s play would result in levelling, but as you get to the higher levels it becomes more like two evenings. Goodness knows what it’ll be like when you hit the 50s!
Meanwhile, Oli’s D&D campaign finished with both our characters doing rather well for themselves, and resting in their own villages. According to Oli, we will be returning to them once he’s written some more adventures for us. I start up this month with a good campaign for high level characters for Oli and mcphee. Not sure I’ll be as good as Oli was, but hey.

BLOGGING & T’INTERNET
Not really managed to blog or find anything amusing this month. In fact, it’s been a barren month on t’internet. And I don’t really have a reason why, either…

BLOGROLL
I’ve added bigfatman to my blurty friends – he updates a lot more regularly than me and is a better writer too.

Alley Katt
Blurty Friends (a number of bloggers that are on blurty)
Bowch
fishmonger malarky
mcphee
Pixie
Prince Gaz
Shooting Parrots

ANYTHING ELSE INTERESTING?
Went out to the sticks to visit Paul and Sara which was lovely: who’d have thought that swingball could make four normally docile people so very, very competitive? I also ent out to the Anderton Boat Lift with my parents for a day out, which was actually quite, quite lovely.

THE WHOLE MONTH IN A FEW WORDS
What? It’s gone? Again?! I’ve not bloody done anything!!!

Have fun,

M x
