'My Corduroyed Life' - Mark A's Journal

This really is a new low: stealing puns from The Sun

I make it no secret my distaste for Manchester United Football Club. I’m a firm believer that fans should support their local team. Being from Wolverhampton, I support Wolverhampton Wanderers. It is, of course, perfectly acceptable for someone from Salford to support Man U (afterall, the club is actually situated in Salford), and just about okay for Mancunians (although they should really be supporting Manchester City, Bolton Wanders, Stockport County, &c if they’re closer to those clubs). Thing is, Man U have more fans outside of Salford/ Manchester than they have in the city. This gets on my nerves.

However, Man U’s fanbase isn’t what this blog is about. As it happens, the other half (from Stockport way) is a Manchester United fan, and I have had to endure the last two Man U matches on the telly: Their 3 – 0 win over Middlesborough and 4 – 2 win over Arsenal. When watching a Man U game, I tend to support ‘the other team’ (whoever they may be) as I just don’t like United. However, to humour the other half, I was kind of supporting United.

Manchester United do play beautiful football: it’s almost like an art form on the pitch. This cannot be denied. However, their last two matches have made me notice something. Wayne Rooney is a petulant young man who is a disgraceful example to the young fans who idolise his football ability. Again, may I stress that Rooney’s footballing prowess is not in question here: the guy is a virtuoso! However, his attitude absolutely stinks. In both games, he didn’t like a decision made by the referee and, to his face, told the official to ‘fuck off’. On both occasions, the official took this verbal abuse without reprimand.

Wayne Rooney is the kind of person that should set a good example to kids. He doesn’t. If someone like Wayne Rooney – famous, rich, always in the media – can swear at authority and get away with it, young people will follow his behaviour. It’s not just Rooney who is in the wrong though, I believe that he should have been carded for insubordination on both occurrences. The second occurrence would have resulted in being sent off. I firmly believe that had he been given the full reprimand he deserved, that he wouldn’t have done it again! Both Rooney and the referees were in the wrong, and made a bad example to goodness knows how many kids. The football league really should do something about this in my opinion.

What’s the betting that the same thing happens in the next match too?

Have fun,

M x
