1st February, 2005. 12:06 pm. Monthly Review - January 2005

Okay, it’s February. How did that happen?!

WORK
Careers offered me some evening work for time and a half, so I’ll be doing that on Wednesdays from now on. More money is good; no Wednesday evening is rubbish. It’s kind of nice that they asked me though, seeing as I’ve been gone 6 months now (at least I wasn’t forgotten, eh?). Meanwhile, SoL is dullsville. Had a busy few days when my new course started, but all the work I’ve put in to get only 6 people turn up was demoralising.

JOB HUNTING
I applied for an internal vacancy at Salford, but didn’t even get an interview. That was quite disheartening. I’ve been scouring the newspapers, but haven’t seen anything that I would really want to do. I haven’t started using the net yet, as my home internet access lasted two weeks before becoming a mess again. I have some thoughts, and am hopeful for next month.

MONEY
Well Paris was expensive, so I had to dig into the inheritance/ savings a little bit! February needs to be a frugal month!

LOVE LIFE
I might get rid of this category as every month I just end up saying something nauseatingly mushy about Rob. As our relationship grows, I see such a wonderful soul: his mere presence fills me with such a glow that I can’t properly describe it. It’s worth noting that at this point in the relationship with every other boyfriend I have either been dumped or had lost interest. Every minute I spend with Rob, I love him more.

NINJA
With the students being away, and me off on me hols coupled with some sinus headaches that I’ve been getting, I’ve not been to much Ninja this month. However, one lesson I did go to involved defending against four opponents: it was fun, but so difficult.

HEALTH
Oh dear. I’ve been missing Ninja, failing to do the stairs, and generally spending too much time being mong. I feel unfit. I also have a mangy cold and cough, and had my evil sinus headaches for over a week too.

BOOKS
As mentioned previously, I’ve read Join Me and Random Acts of Kindness: 365 Ways to Make the World a Nicer Place by Danny Wallace. I really enjoyed them both (enough to join a cult!). I’ve finally finished Why Do People Hate America by Ziauddin Sardar and Merryl Wyn Davies where I’ve been reading each chapter sporadically as separate essays: it’s an interesting read, and brings up some valid and worrying points. Definitely worth a read if you’re interested in that sort of thing. I also read a geek book about Experts in D&D. Just a couple of days ago I started A Series of Unfortunate Events book 4 and have Bill Bryson and Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norris still to read.

MUSICA
I bought myself a geek toy from duty free: a 1gig memory stick. Pretty much the soul reason for purchase is for me to swap huge amounts of music with people. I have swiped loads already: it’s great. Of particular note that I’ve been listening to are the My Ruin albums, Counting Crows, Gwen Stefani, Midnight Syndicate, and Ulrich Schnauss. Am loving music right now!

FILM
I’ve seen next to no films this month! It’s so difficult to find time to do everything. I wish I needed less sleep!

Vera Drake
Imelda Staunton gives the performance of a lifetime in this tragic and grim story of one of Britain’s underground abortionists before abortion was legal.
****

Blade Trinity
The first two Blade films had something resembling plot and Sci-Fi credentials coupled with decent directors that made them somewhat more classy than the average vampire flick. This didn’t: weak plot, but some fun set pieces. HHH from the wrestling was wooden as hell, but I still buzzed off him hitting a powerslam…
***

K-Pax
I really enjoyed this film. Kevin Spacey stole the show (as he always does). I love the fact that even at the end, you still don’t know whether he was or not. Intelligent, challenging, speculative Sci-Fi – good stuff.
****

Young and Dangerous 3
This was a perfectly enjoyable gangster film, with some of the brutality that made the first two so memorable. Sadly, unlike the previous two, the plot was simplistic. Despite this, Andrew Lau’s character was hilarious, Ekin Cheng was fit, and GiGi Lau was adorable. No classic, but not a turkey.
***

Party Monster
Macauley Culkin and Seth Green in a gayness film. This looked like it was going to be fabulous. Sadly, it was only mediocre.
***

TELLY
As usual, everything that I’ve watched telly wise has been on DVD.

Alias – Season 2
Just listing the guest stars for this show is impressive: Quentin Tarentino, Danny Trejo, Christian Slater, Ethan Hawke to name a few. This season was great, but for some reason that I can’t quite put my finger on, it didn’t addict me quite as much as the first. Still, this is an amazing show with some quality acting.
****

The Office – Christmas Specials
Aw bless! I nearly cried when Dawn and Tim got together. I think this was the right time to ‘close’ the office as it was truly fantastic and weaker cash in series’ would have debased it. Cringeworthy, black humour all the way, and this big softie was pleased that (nearly) everyone was happy at the end.
****

Bo Selecta – Series 3
Series one and two were innovative and hilarious. Series three, although still quite funny, seemed to be the last legs of a gimmicky programme spreading itself too thin. Good, but not as good as it once was.
***

Ho Ho Ho Selecta (Bo Selecta Christmas Special)
A very hit and miss episode of Bo Selecta with a Christmas Carol satire going all the way through. Funny, but no classic.
***

Little Britain – Series 1
A complete and utter gem! This has me and my friends running around imitating ‘don’t like it’ and ‘eh, eh, eeeeh’ and giggling like school children. Clever, intelligent, silly, and very British.
*****

24 – Season 3
This series’ gimmick is no longer that amazing, but it is still horribly addictive, gripping, top quality stuff. I just simply cannot fault this series: it has made me gasp, cry, cheer, fret, and grab the end of my seat.
*****

Shameless – Series 1
Scallytastic! Cringeworthy, yet tender: this subtley comic programme is extremely enjoyable, well thought out telly.
****

RPG AND GAMING
In Oli’s evil D&D, Havok has levelled to Fighter 6, and is now quite the mean and brutal fighting machine. Yay!
I’ve also invested in Chez Geek and Strange Synergy for the Madhouse Pubmeet in Feb. Played Chez Geek, and it’s great fun. Think I might buy Munchkin Fu when I’ve got paid too.

BLOGGING & T’INTERNET
I’ve been a bit sparse on the blog front for which I apologise: it’s been a combination of lack of inspiration and lack of time. Not really found anything interesting on the internet except the Bored of the Rings thing I posted earlier this month.

BLOGROLL
Some are updated more regularly than others…

Alley Katt
Blurty Friends (a number of bloggers that I’ve met through blurty)
Bowch
fishmonger malarky
Fluff
mcphee
Mojo (inactive)
Pixie
Prince Gaz
Shooting Parrots

ANYTHING ELSE INTERESTING?
Obviously, there was Paris! Rob and I had such a lovely, lovely time! We shamelessly saw all the main touristy things like Sacre Cur, The Grande Arche, The Arc de Triomphe, The Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, &c. We also managed to find a gay guide to Paris, and went to a number of French gay bars which was fun too.
The parents came to visit, and we did The Lowry, Ordsall Hall Museum, Frankie and Benny’s and the Primark. Fun.
Petey (of the 30+ nicknames) and phee came for a rockworld last weekend, and here are some amusing photos.

Drunk? Us?!

Petey fell over and hurt his hip. Phee and I mocked him callously the morning after… I kinda feel a bit guilty now!

THE WHOLE MONTH IN A FEW WORDS
An interesting month with some heavy shit going down (not mentioned here), but also with some fabulous times and hope for a good year.

Have fun,

M x
