I’ve joined a cult…

Random Acts of Kindness: 365 Ways to Make the World a Nicer Place - The other book

It’s a nice cult though. In fact, it’s not a cult, it’s a collective.

I finished reading the delightfully light-hearted travel/ humour book Join Me by Danny Wallace over the Christmas period, and immediately bought Random Acts of Kindness: 365 Ways to Make the World a Nicer Place straight after it. I thoroughly enjoyed both: they’re fun and silly reads for anyone who has ever had the misfortune of being a bored procrastinating bloke and having your mind wander. This is what happens when you mind wanders, and then snowballs.

Basically, the cult I've joined is a kindness cult, and our religious day is ‘Good Friday’. All joinees have pledged that they will do a ‘random act of kindness for a stranger’ on every single Friday of the year. How great is that?

Some of my random acts of kindness so far:

I sent a postcard to a Lighthouse keeper
I sent Random Acts of Kindness: 365 Ways to Make the World a Nicer Place to a random person I picked with a pin in the phone book
I sent a good luck message to an astronaut
I left 10 minutes early for work, and let out everyone I possibly could in the early morning traffic
I posted a rubber duck (with no explanation) to a random person I picked with a pin in the phone book
I bought the lady in the Morrison’s who served me a chocolate orange bar

I know this sounds twee, but doing random nice things for random people really does make you feel amazingly good. I love my cult, and I buzz off the Good Friday thing. And how long does it take? A few seconds once a week.

Thing is, I’m a bit rubbish, and much prefer to do things by post rather than in person. Any ideas for random acts of kindness or what would be cool to send someone by post would be greatly appreciated.

By the way… I think you should join me.

Have fun,

M x
