'My Corduroyed Life' - Mark A's Journal

10th August, 2004. 3:02 pm. Madhouse Minicon

No blog for a week, I know, but I've been on my holidays!

I'm not really a big 'save up lots of money and go abroad for two weeks' holiday kinda guy. I much prefer extended weekends somewhere pretty in England or Wales on the cheap. It comes from being a roleplayer and being spoilt as a child and going abroad every year. As a roleplayer, I've been all around the country: Manchester, Wigan, Warrington, Hemel Hempstead, Blackpool, Bristol, Oxford, Bimingham, Huddersfield, Tunbridge Wells, and Wisbech (and probably some more I've forgotten).

From last Wednesday to Monday, I went to Wisbech (I hadn't heard of it either – apparently, it’s near Kings Lynn) on an extended weekend Madhouse pubmeet (where I play the game Dungeonworld).

Highlights included:
Booze.
Playing a pompous 'jolly fine chappie' British stereotype in the Space marines over the table RPG.
Taking out the most powerful character in the game with one hit in the medieval Pitfighter RPG.
Booze.
The annual 'Ball In Face' tournament in the pool.*
Mmmmm, jacussi.
Booze.
Meal in a Chinese restaurant.
Settlers, Settlers, Settlers (possibly the best board game in the world).
Booze.
Getting five straight boys, including a squaddie and the owner of the Madhouse, to play the 'Just 17 - Kiss Chase' board game that I got from a charity shop for 50p.
Dressing up as an old woman in my annual part in the play written by my mate Andy.**
Booze.
Lying in the moonlight in my sleeping bag watching schlock.
Talking about geeky crap and sex into the wee hours on Sunday night.
Booze.

* 'Ball in Face' is a delightful game with few rules. Teams of three or four on either side of a small swimming pool try to throw a ball in their opponents’ faces: 10 points for ball in face, 3 points against if you knock the ball out of the pool, 1 point if you hit the back of the pool but it stays in play. First to 20 wins.
Having been on the winning team last year (The Disableds - we were all blind), I had high hopes for my new team Priscilla's Pink Panthers as we had the strongest guy there (a massive fireman by the name of Martin) on our team. Alas, we came last due to a ball in the face of both me and other team-mate Bill. Doh!

** Every meet, a certain bunch of nutters put on a comedy play for everyone else. I am one of these nutters. It is basically an excuse for me to put on a dress and act like an idiot and make friends laugh. In this particular play, a Sci-Fi comedy, I was the ship's computer who's programming had gone a bit wonky and given her the personality of an old lady. I had a dress, a grey wig, a stick and everything. Of course, I thoroughly, thoroughly enjoyed it.

I can't say how much I've enjoyed this weekend. Of course, I'm not surprised about this as I always do. I love it! It's 30 - 40 nutters from all walks of life who have two things in common: roleplaying and the fact that they're fantastic people. Those two things are all that matter, and we all have a fantastic time. Everyone from the Fireman to the Electrician to the Squaddie to the Civil Servant to the Policeman to the Computer Programmer, &c. One guy even came over from Cleveland in America for the damned thing! Big up to Larry!

This was *supposed* to be a quick 'Mark explains why he's not blogged blog' but it's ended up being another one of my epics. Not that I care! I might have mentioned it, but just in case I didn't: I had a fantastic weekend!

Have fun,

M
