'My Corduroyed Life' - Mark A's Journal

10th June, 2004. 12:15 pm. Fifteen Quid's Worth Of Good Intentions

I went to Holland and Barratt's on Tuesday...

Slowly but surely, I am making progress in my quest to eat healthily. I've pretty much cut Fast Food out of my diet, having not been to McDonalds for over 6 months, and would estimate I've been to Burger King and KFC combined less than once a month. I've also not touched a kebab for about four months. Thing is, I don't miss fast food or kebabs as the only thing that they ever really had going for them was convenience. As such, I'll go to a poncey sandwich bar instead if I need quick food to go.

My bane (other than the obvious chocolate thing) is salty snacks. I love heavily salted crisps, popcorn, nuts, &c. This is proving a difficult nut to crack. However, I am hoping that I can overcome my taste for salt by having alternative snacks that aren't salty. If I allow myself to continue to snack, but on things that are good for me as opposed to salty things, I can at least slightly improve my diet.

So I went to Holland and Barrett's to see if there were any good ideas for alternative snacks to a bag of crisps. I then got a little carried away, and bought the following:

1 x Lrg bag Popping Corn (Without salt, it's dead good for you apparently)

1 x Lrg bag Fruit and Nut Muesli (I SO hate muesli, but I'm hoping I can acquire a taste)

1 x Lrg bag Sunflower seeds (Vague recollection of liking them as a child)

1 x Lrg bag Dried Pineapple Chunks (Healthy alternative to a bag of crisps?)

1 x Lrg bag Raisins (Ditto)

1 x Lrg bag Dried Apricots (Ditto again)

5 x Kellogg's NutriGrain (Crap, overpriced breakfast is better than the no breakfast I currently eat)

6 x Can V8 Vegetable Juice (It tastes like Gespacho soup and is two of your daily portions, you know)

1 x Nut Roast (Whim as I was curious about the veggie alternative to Christmas Dinner - is it actually nice?)

1 x Mdm bag Cous Cous (Another whim, as they serve it at posh restaurants - had no idea that it was good for you)

1 x Lrg tube Mushroom Pate (Yet another whim - "Oooooooh! Mushroom Pate! I like mushrooms and I like pate!")

As long as I actually enjoy these things, I can't see why I won't stick to a better diet... But we'll see. I really do want to eat better, and although my progress has been slow over the last couple of years, at least there's been progress. I see weaning myself of my caffeine in Cola addiction, drinking more water as a result, eating more fish, and quitting kebabs and fast food as achievements. I think that this is going to be the final hurdle.

Having said all that, I'm actually eating the dried pineapple chunks at the moment, and they're a bit sickly sweet to be honest. Bah.

Have fun,

M

10th June, 2004. 12:28 pm. Gits

Mocking the hypochondriac, is mean!

I had to go to the bloody clap clinic yesterday as a 'recent sexual partner' informed me that he had a delightful virus that he may have given me. Of course, the visit was a most distressing and unpleasant experience. Upon receiving my results, I was pleased to discover that I had the all clear in everything. I texted the people I'd told that I might have a problem, and got the following texts back.

mcphee:
"Awh"

Ninja Rich:
"Aaaw, i was looking forward to calling you a diseased hussy! congratulations anyway, bet your crabs are having a party to celebrate!

David (my brother):
"Still wrong, though. D"

Bunch of gits...

Have fun,

M

10th June, 2004. 12:53 pm. Pseudodictionary

I have words in it!

I was told about Pseudodictionary by my mate Tate, and it reminded me of one of my early blogs: 10 Words That Should Be In The Dictionary. So I ran my seven clean ones (they don't allow rude words) through their search option, and discovered that four of them aren't in the Pseudodictionary. I submitted them, and they were accepted.

Yay! Take a look - I'm credited, and everything!

Biffa
Mong
Scutah
Splaugh
(Type them into the search for words box)

I then thought about other words I use that are somewhat made up and random, and discovered that the following are already there:

Breeder
Pants (as in, "That low fat chocolate is pants.")
Bostin'

I have just submitted the following additions:

Tunted
Monkified
Mince (as in gay walking)

I'm sure I use loads of silly words, so will probably be submitting crap to this site on a regular basis!

Have fun,

M

Current mood: amused.
Current music: Still Naked Lounge - I do have half a review blog written....

10th June, 2004. 1:56 pm. New PC

Don't get too excited - I'm only being hypothetical...

Okay, so I *may* have found some money to spend on a new PC. I also know exactly what I want it to do. I have a perfectly fine monitor, sub woofer speakers, mouse and keyboard (and BT Broadband modem), but don't know whether it'll be a better idea to get a new ones in some sort of package deal (IE: it'll actually save me money on software if I get the deal with the peripherals). I am also considering going to an independent shop as opposed to one of the biggies like PC World. This is basically an appeal for advice! What do techy people recommend I should do?

What I want (in priority order):
Massive memory to house a huge music collection
Full Microsoft packages in NT
Powerful Firewall and Antivirus
CD Burner
DVD Burner
(anything else is a bonus)

My budget:
About £1000

What do you think my best options are, guys?

Cheers,

Mark

Current mood: curious.
Current music: As before.
