'My Corduroyed Life' - Mark A's Journal I know that this is a good thing, but why is it that I'm not covered? The Employment Equality (Religion or Belief) Regulations 2003 came in at the same time as The Employment Equality (Sexual Orientation) Regulations 2003 and I heavily, heavily praised both of them (despite the fact it was about bloody time). However, after training on them recently, I have come to think that The Employment Equality (Religion or Belief) Regulations have a glaring and unacceptable ommision in them. Let me draw you to this statement in the Regulations: Interpretation 2. - (1) In these Regulations, "religion or belief" means any religion, religious belief, or similar philosophical belief. My understanding of this is that everyone from Christianity to Islam to Rastafarianism to Paganism is covered. However, it does not cover athiesm as it is, by definition: 'Disbelief in or denial of the existence of God or gods.' (Dictionary.com). It seems to me that for something as well known as atheism, that something should be added. As is, it seems that it is perfectly legal for a religious person to dismiss/ percecute atheists at work because of their atheism, and considering what the the Regulations were supposed to stop/ prevent, this is a travesty. WARNING - NEW SCAM Generally, I hate the hoax warnings that get sent around, but I have to admit that this one is important. Please protect everyone you know by sending this to your entire email list. If a man comes to your front door and says he is conducting a survey and asks you to show him your bum, do not show him your bum. This is a scam - he only wants to see your bum. I wish I'd got this yesterday. I feel so stupid and cheap. Current mood: Current music: Starting Over by The Crystal Method. |
