'My Corduroyed Life' - Mark A's Journal

10th December, 2003. 12:46 pm. FOUL mood

I really am in one...

When I say foul mood, I mean a fucking foul mood. I am currently unapproachable, kurt, irritable and generally unpleasant. This is something I rarely do, but you really know about it when I do.

It's got to the point where I see people being happy, that I want to smack them round the face and scream:
"Can't you see I'm in a foul mood?! No-one is allowed to be happy when I'm miserable! Can't you see that the weather is ridiculously cold, I had a really shitty sleep last night, there's only two weeks 'til Christmas and I've bought fuck all presents, I'm fucking skint and somehow have to afford the Staff Christmas Do three days before payday, I am horrendously behind at work and can't seem to catch up and am about to get caught and bollocked, I failed my Ninja grading last night because I can't speak Japanese and didn't actually get any opportunity to really show what I can do, I have had fucking 'Toy Boy' by Sinitta going through my head since 10am, since blogging about overanalysis I have overanalysed absolutely everyone and everything in my life and have made myself paranoid; hypochondriac; and miserable, nobody loves me, and even chocolate isn't helping?! What's wrong with you with your chirpy, gerbil-faced optimism, you utter BASTARD!"

I also thought a vent on my blog would do some good, but it's done jack shit. GAH!

M

Current mood: morose.
Current music: Toy Boy by Sinitta (please kill me).

10th December, 2003. 6:05 pm. Something That Cheered Me Up

Even if it was only temporary...

Am still in a bad mood, although it can no longer be called FOUL. One thing that cheered me up momentarily is cut and pasted below. Whilst at work today, as I tried to get myself out of the shit by finding an email I'd sent and seeing what it said, I discovered in my sent items this series of emails to my friend Sam from almost a year ago (I should probably have a clear out). We'd gone for lunch up the local pub during our lunch hour, and she'd got a new purse. It was large. I quipped that it looked like a granny's purse to which she was horrified. Sam and I are remarkably childish together, and are constantly taking the mick out of each other in REALLY puerile ways. However, she really liked the purse, and as such I pounced (she would and has done the same to me). After lunch we had the following email conversation (best to scroll down and read from the bottom up). I laughed so much at the time, and as I say, rereading it cheered me up a bit. Suppose I should say thanks to Sam if she's reading this... Ugh! Did I not enjoy that! ;)

Have fun,

M

10th December, 2003. 10:52 pm. Two Of The Most Gripping Cliffhangers I've Ever Experienced

And within the space of a week too...

Over the last week, I've experienced two of the most amazingly tense and gripping (and rather upsetting inasmuch as you want to know what happens hext straight away) cliffhangers I think I've ever experienced. Also, they are from mediums you'd not expect. Now I'm not going to ruin these cliffhangers for those who haven't experienced them, but I will tell you where they're from...

The first was actually from a book! Having seen Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy being heavily big upped in The Big Read (http://www.bbc.co.uk/arts/bigread/), I decided that I'd see what the fuss is about. The cliffhanger at the end of the second volume, The Subtle Knife (http://www.randomhouse.com/features/pullman/subtleknife/), was just superb! Everything happened in the last few pages of the book leading a crescendo into a gutwrenching finale that left me desperate to read the next one. Normally when reading a series of books, I'll read another one or two different books inbetween volumes, but there was no way I could not go straight onto the third book after that cliffhanger. Fantastic, fantastic stuff.

The second was not only a webcast, but was also a Doctor Who story (http://www.bbc.co.uk/cult/doctorwho/shalka/). Please don't mock me. I've been enjoying the The Scream of the Shalka 9th Doctor webcast over the last month, BUT I realise my great fondness for the telly programme has given me rose tinted glasses. It IS only average animation, and the episodes are only ten minutes long which makes them a little simplistic, BUT it's Doctor Who, dammit! The episode in question (episode four) was out last Friday and I've been aching for the next episode ever since! This cliffhanger was one that came out of nowhere to be a complete shock, was completely unusual, and cleverly done. Also, the classic "peeeeeeeeeew... woo woo woo" abrupt entry into the credits that sent shivers down my spine as a kid (but was sorely missing from previous Shalka episodes' cliffhangers) sent that familiar shiver all over again. Fantastic.

Would recommend both His Dark Materials and The Scream of the Shalka anyway, but if you buzz of cliffhangers, I'd recommend them even more.

Have fun,

M

Current mood: impressed.
Current music: New Doctor Who theme?.
