23rd November, 2003. 5:31 pm. Philip Pullman's Dæmons

If you've read Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy, I'm sure it'll be no surprise to learn that I really, really want my own dæmon...

For those of you that haven't read His Dark Materials (To be fair, I've only actually read the first one), the human inhabitants of the world in which the first book, Northern Lights, all have their own dæmon. A dæmon is basically a creature that is linked to them mentally and their permanent companion. In this world, to kill a person is to kill their dæmon, and to kill a dæmon is to mentally destroy a person. The dæmon takes a form of an animal, and can be anything from a monkey to a pelican to a dog to a wildcat to a rabbit to anything. As children grow up, their dæmon morphs into different shapes to reflect their mood and feelings, but one a child hits adulthood, it takes a permanent shape and loses the morphing ability. An adult's dæmon's form reflects the person's personality. For example, a docile person might have a sloth as their daemon or a majestic person might have a black cat.

So, of course, I want my own dæmon. This got me thinking. If I did have a dæmon, what form would it have settled into once I became a man? (This is where I show you how much of a sad life I live) I wrote down ten good personality traits and ten bad personality traits that I feel I have (and no, I'm not putting them down here), and looked at them, and thought what animal might display/ reflect the majority of these things. And so, I reckon my daemon would be a...

This was just going to be a Linkin Park blither, but as usual, I appear to have got onto my tandem...

As mentioned previously, I went to see Linkin Park on Friday night with my mate Dave. They played at the MEN Arena (http://www.men-arena.com) which is Europe's largest indoor concert venue with a capacity of something like 10,000. To say it was a stadium gig is somewhat of an understatement. Dave and I had tickets on the highest balcony, so we were something of a large distance away from the Linkins (can you say 'Kinder Toy size'?). The tickets cost £25 which is the absolute maximum I'll pay for any group other that one I'm absolutely obsessed with like Prodigy and Rob Zombie. It was a great gig: I had a great time, and came out buzzing. It helped that the support were a band I like too: The Lost Profits.

I've seen Lost Profits do better sets, but they were still very enjoyable. Linkin Park were just great. The thing about Linkin Park is that they've been slated for being too similar live to their recorded tracks. The fact that it's their exceptional voices and music talent that allows them to accomplish this particularly difficult task appears to be overlooked. They were similar live to their recorded stuff, but not to the extent that if you put the two albums on random play in your CD player that it'd sound the same. The set was also somewhat impressive with a fantastic screen show, but in a stadium the size of the MEN, a video screen would have been nice.

As I say, tickets for this gig (which was a sellout) were £25 (£20 plus a fiver [scowl] booking fee), which was just about an acceptable price for the gig. However, this got me thinking: just *how* much was made that night? So, 25 x 10,000 is £250,000. £50,000 of this was made by money grabbing ticket distributor bastards who dare to add a disgusting 25% of the ticket cost to the tickets they sell. So it's £200,000 net. I don't know how much running costs (staff, lighting, sets, etc) cost but bloody hell: that's a hell of a lot of money for one night's work!

Have fun,

M

Current mood: Mmmkay, perhaps a little tired.
Current music: Pick a Linkin Park song, any Linkin Park song!.

23rd November, 2003. 10:30 pm. New Look Blog

Looky, looky: isn't it pretty?!

I've been playing on the blurty website and changed the appearance of my journal to something a bit more stylish. Also, if I use a standard mood, I'll now get pretty Chinese symbols. Yay! I is pleased.

The other MAJOR thing I've decided on is to allow people to make comments in responce to my posts. It says Make Notes on the bottom of each post I make: that is a link - click on it and you can now make comments on my blog! For non-blurty account holders (which is nearly everyone), you can either register for one (which is a bit of an effort), or just post anonymously (if you post anonymously, please PLEASE say who you are).

To celebrate the pretty new look, I'm gonna do a blog courtesy and a sites I regularly visit... Cos I still can't sort them out as a permanent thing at the side of my blog, sadly (pretty sure the facility isn't available).
