'My Corduroyed Life' - Mark A's Journal Beware: pink soapbox alert!!! Was reading Gaz's blog (http://www.princegaz.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/blog/index.htm) earlier, and he was talking about mcphee's (http://www.monkeys-and-pirates.com/index.php) use of the word 'Wrong' to mean Gay. At no point have I been offended by phee's usage of the word wrong to describe my sexuality, but were someone to say it with malice and hate and actually mean it (as opposed to phee, who says it in a silly and friendly way to take the mickey out of a mate), I would, quite obviously, grossly offended. The simple fact of the matter is that homosexuality is not wrong. Anyone who actually thinks that it is, and that it should be prevented/ made illegal once more is actually the one who is wrong. It is wrong to dictate what another person can and can't do if it does not effect your life. I believe that in a democratic society, one should have the right to liberty. My understanding of liberty is pretty much gleaned from the French Revolution outlook inasmuch as I see liberty as the right to do whatever you like as long as you don't effect anyone else's liberty. I guess that that is all us 'Wrong 'Uns' really want (we don't get it, but that's a tirade for another time). Gaz pretty much sums up exactly how I feel about something like this: "Like any description, what matters is both the intention of the person saying it but mainly how you feel about it yourself." Of course Graeme doesn't mean it when he states that homosexuality is wrong: he's my friend, and he's just being daft. Similarly, when I say "Fuck off, ya puff!" to Tony after he's been mean to me, of course I don't mean it! And to be fair, I don't actually want him to "fuck off" either. The intention is to be daft, not to actually demand that he goes away because I don't like him as he's gay. That would be a bit mad, really?! Later on, Gaz mentions that phee doesn't call him "Wrong Gaz" and may not do so in fear of offending him. In fact, phee has on numerous occassions when talking about me on his blog put footnotes to the effect of "don't take offence, I'm not homophobic, just winding up a friend." This, I guess, is the way of the world. I could probably name fifty people that if they were to call me a puff, arse bandit, homo, etc, I wouldn't be offended... but whether or not they'd actually say it is another matter. Of course, were some random person with a chip on their shoulder and a dislike of me/ my sexuality to say something like that, I'd hit the roof. It's all about context, and I know some gay people are more sensitive about it than others, but anyone with any sense can tell if there's any hatred/ intent when people say things. Oh, and I think "Wrong Gaz" has a really nice ring to it! [grin] Have fun, M PS: Am I the only person in the UK that is cynical enough to think this challenging IDS's leadership of the Conservative party thing is nothing but a publicity stunt to make him more well known and get the dull and usually un-newsworthy Conservative Party into the news? The news has been utterly dominated by IDS over the past few days, and I bet public awareness of who the bloody hell he actually is has rocketed. Prior to this, it was "Ian Duncan Who?" Call me cynical if you want, but that's what I reckon... Current mood: Predictably Mmmkay. Current music: The Angel Theme. And this post is deliberately here to remind him to not forget it! If I haven't got myself all confused, it's basically something he used to run for Quest players a while ago (when I was playing Crasiworld [http://www.crasiworld.com] and not KJC's Quest [http://www.kjcgames.com/] which is a shame, but hey). However, the suggestion now is that the bloggers (Pixie, mcphee, Bowch, Prince Gaz, Fluffy, Casp, et moi) give it a go (run through phee's website). It's something along the lines of a 'Choose Your Own Adventure' (http://www.80snostalgia.com/memories/cyoadventure.html) or 'Fighting Fantasy' (http://www.advancedfightingfantasy.com/gamebooks.htm) written by a group of people (IE: us bloggers). The twist is this, one writer writes a chapter/ paragraph and gives the options, then the next writer gets the opportunity to take one of the options and write what happens next with options at the bottom, etc, etc. Sounds like fun, and phee is going to set it up asap... AREN'T YOU PHEE! Have fun, M PS: While looking for a website to explain CYOA books, I came upon this delightfully cynical and vicious satire of both CYOA and modern life: an online version of CYOA books for adults! Enjoy! http://www.capnwacky.com/choose/ Current mood: Anticipative (is that a word?). Current music: Girl's Not Grey by AFI. |
