Choosing the right glue for your project
Different projects require different adhesives because after an adhesive dries it may become hard and brittle, or it may remain pliable and flexible. See, if you were to fix a broken cabinet joint with, you would want to use an adhesive that stiffens when it dries; not one that remains flexible. However, if you are gluing two different materials then a more flexible adhesive would make sense because they will expand and contract differently. When using a stiff drying glue, it would easily break away from the material.

You will want an adhesive that is resistant to chemicals if the material you are gluing will be subject to any chemicals. For instance, when gluing a piece of your kitchen counter you will likely, in the future, use household cleaners. Many of them have chemicals which would eat away an adhesive, so a chemical resistant glue would be perfect.

Also an important consideration when choosing an adhesive is your environment. An example would be an area of high humidity or moisture. You will want to choose an adhesive that is waterproof for this environment.

There are many different types of adhesives available, but not all of them can be used for all projects.

    • Hot glue is a common type of glue that must be used with a hot glue gun. Hot glue is a moderate bonding adhesive that sets very quickly. It's most often used for craft and hobby projects.

    • Another type of adhesive is epoxy glue, which needs to be mixed before use. It's best used on non-porous material because it is ia strong bonding glue. You don't want to use epoxy glue on plastic because it will dissolve it.

    • When clamping is not an option, contact cement is an often used adhesive. Contact cement is a strong adhesive and bonds permanently once applied.

    • Another moderate strength adhesive is white glue. White glue is not water resistant and is best used on wood and paper materials.

    • Animal glue is the first glue that people used. It can be applied when cold or hot, in liquid form. Constructing furniture is a common use for Animal glue because it has strong bonding abilities.

There are many types of adhesives and finding the right glue for your project can make all the difference in if that glue will hold long term. Many adhesives are toxic and some are also flammable, so when using glue make sure that you read the directions carefully to avoid injury.
