Subject:That's Not Laid Back, That's Screwed Up

I finally got to watch the first David Soul episode of Holby City tonight (Going Gently-2001). The episode blurb reads "Anton Meyer's absence leaves laid-back Prof Alan Fletcher in charge." David Soul being Professor Fletcher. Let me state up front, Alan Fletcher is not laid back. He is screwed up, broken, and past his prime. And David Soul played him beautifully. That character was looked up to, a hero amongst the heart surgeons, so to have him step in for two weeks while their main surgeon was out was an honor. But as we all know, heroes fall and age and are brought back to earth when faced with the reality of their failings. He was good at what he did when he was younger, but he had been out of the game for too long. He taught many young surgeons how to create miracles with a scalpel, but over time he lost the ability himself. I am very impressed with this character and this show as a whole. For all the reasons I can't get into Eastenders, I can really see myself getting into Holby City. It's a fast-paced show with characters that intersect, but don't overpower each other. Leave it to me to fall in love with a BBC hospital drama of which I only have two episodes:) I'm planning on watching his second appearance tomorrow night. He did good, really really good.

And totally unrelated, Roy Horn will be interviewed by Maria Shriver on the NBC Special "Siegfried and Roy: The Miracle" on Wednesday, September 15th. They filmed it over several months and it will show alot about his recovery and have interviews with not only Siegfried and Roy, but his doctors and friends and witnesses to the event that changed his life forever. I will definitely be watching.
