The horror! I'm actually gonna write about another fandom:) And that fandom is...Star Trek: The Original Series. I've been a fan (not in the fandom) for as long as I can remember. Everytime Star Trek would come on television I was watching it. Every movie, I own them. Well, I own all of them, but I only love the Original Series ones (1-6). I watched TNG, but there's just something about the movies that don't make me feel the same. Maybe it's because Geordi isn't blind anymore. Hmm, there might be something to that.
Anyway, like I was saying, I love The Original Series. However, my line about the slash has always been the same. I never really saw it in the series. I saw the series as a great friendship piece and then there were The Lost Years where I am pretty sure there was a lover's quarrel between Spock and Kirk. Maybe Spock chose logic over emotion and couldn't allow himself to be open to love. Maybe Kirk was being Kirk and acted like an idiot. Whatever the reason, they seperated. Then the movies came and there was slash upon slash. It began when Spock chose to return to Kirk rather than leave behind all emotions. When he walked onto the bridge of the Enterprise, Kirk was not looking like a man who was welcoming his friend back. He was a man welcoming his lover home. That's the difference.
Like I said, I never really saw the slash in the series. I thought I had seen all the eps, too, but apparently Shore Leave slipped by me. How did this slip by me? Kirk's a man bordering on lust here. Oh my gosh, that's some serious business. So, I wanted to get myself into the idea that slash during the series existed. I looked at stories, many stories, and finally found the one I needed. And In The Darkness Bind You is set during/after Operation: Annihilate. For those of you who are unaware, this ep deals with Spock being blinded. Yes, it would be one of my favorite eps ever. The other would have to be The Apple because of a very odd-looking, very horny, half-naked David Soul. And the top one would be For The World Is Hollow And I Have Touched The Sky because it's a McCoy ep and he's dying in it (slow, pain, very good). I'm definitely a McCoy girl:)
Anyway, getting back to the story, I can totally see the emotions and circumstances that brought out these feelings in the story. It's plausible to me to see this as an integration into canon. And I can definitely see how it would lay the groundwork for all the emotions and feelings that came about with the movies. Or maybe my Star Trek movie love is more about the older man love. I mean, the more DeForest Kelley aged, the hotter he was:) Yeah, I'm all about older McCoy...younger McCoy...any McCoy.
