DrugsAndDrappery: The release of new and positive energies can bring unexpected challenges, and such is the case this fall, when we face the short-term challenge of larger-than-anticipated enrollment. We are addressing this challenge by increasing both the number of classes offered and the number of faculty available to serve on committees. The office of student services is developing additional community activities and identifying social gathering spaces. Our most pressing challenge is a shortage of bed space, and we are meeting this challenge through several measures: we have expanded the number of students eligible for off-campus housing; we have temporarily converted select lounges in the Dakin and Merrill residence halls to house students; we have accelerated the renovations in the mods to make additional apartments available by late September, and we have also accepted the generous offer of Amherst College to house a small number of our continuing students. Finally, a small number of students, no more than sixty, will be housed temporarily in the nearby Howard Johnson. There will be house staff present, and there will be dedicated shuttle service between the campus and the hotel. I expect that this arrangement will be brief, no longer than six to eight weeks, and that students will be back on campus well before the end of the fall term.
