7:28pm: Voldemerlyn Strikes Again!
Most of my friends know about the great Prisoner of Azkaban Munching of 2004, perpetrated by none other than Voldemerlyn the Peckish, but here's some breaking news...

Voldemerlyn is at it Again!!!

Here's what "He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Allowed-Near-Anything-I-Value" did this time...

Poor Harry. Notice his snitch seeking hand is twisted back and is not only missing a hand, but also the snitch!

12:41pm: Received email from an old friend today...turns out we had a baby only days apart! And while she was checking out Liz's website, she was like, "I noticed some HP banter on your blog...I am so obsessed with HP!" *weeps*

So now after talking to Lettie and having considered poony and dailern's complaints that all we talk about is the baby, I am once again going to immerse myself into the world of HP so we can have some sweet conversations concerning how DD is def. NOT dead no matter what BB or JK Rowling have to say about it. Am off to read some mugglenet essays...

11:02am: Have finally settled into my house, which I love. Am so glad to be back in Decatur.

There are several projects I can't wait to start on around here, first of which is to get new countertops, a sink, and a faucet for my kitchen. I also need to get window coverings for half the house, and purchase a king size bed. My bedroom is so huge, the sparse furnishings make it look empty. Merl and T love the backyard, even though there's a german shepherd living in the backyard adjoining ours (they bark constantly at each other, I really hope they get used to one another soon).

I had forgotten how many animals there are around here. I woke up one morning to take the dogs out and there were 2 huge hawks on my fence. There's also a ton of bunnies, chipmunks, and squirrels around to keep the dogs busy. And I've noticed a nearly complete absence of roaches! I've only seen one (a carcass) in my backyard. Hooray for not living in Tuscaloosa!!

On the downside, there always seems to be people around from high school. And I only vaguely remember their faces, and am completely terrified that they might come up and talk to me. I have a feeling I will be forced to get over that fear very quickly.

2:57pm: So, a lot has been going on. Bought a house, moving to Decatur. House is SWEET. Love house. *kisses house*

Am busy working on closing on my new home, and getting everything ready to get out of Tuscaloosa. John got *excellent* job and wants to move closer to his dad (prayers would be appreciated, despite my agnosticism, as John's dad has leukemia and needs kind thoughts right now).

Lizzy's doing great and said, "dadadadadadadaaaaaaaaaaaaa" today for the first time.

11:38am: Seriously Fucked Up Lady

Wow. I'm not shocked by this because of what she said, I think there are probably lots of people like her. But did you see the looks on her family's faces?? Her husband looked so embarassed, and I think her youngest kid thought Jesus was about to come wage war right then and there, assigning her mom the rank of generalissimo in charge of squashing every "dark-sided" person with her considerable bulk. Damn. I mean, damn.

Yep, that "new" dinosaur was named in honor of J.K. Rowling. I shit you not.

Also, Abrams is making a Star Trek chronicling Kirk and Spocks days at the Academy in San Fran. How neat. I'd rather see Picard or Data at Starfleet, but oh well.

1:39am: I just saw the cutest, sweetest thing in the world. Lizzy was lying in her crib asleep, on her side, holding the little blanky/sheep thingy (that Jordan and Leah gave her, which is by far her favorite toy) in her hands, the covers kicked off, with her little feet crossed over each other. I'm sure babies do stuff like that all the time, but it broke my heart when I saw how sweet she looked sleeping like that. Who would have thought something that simple could arouse so much emotion?

In completely other news, I saw something very strange in the sky the other morning. It was extremely bright (at first I thought it was a helicopter) and slowly rose in the sky like any star would. Except this couldn't have been a star. It was so incredibly bright and strange that I called John down to look at it. It really scared me (anyone who knows me knows that I am completely terrified of aliens). I emailed one of the astronomy professors at school to see if he knew what it was and he said it wasn't one of the "usual suspects" because of where it was in the sky and the time I witnessed it. He was interested enough to ask me to watch again and tell him in more detail its position and how fast it rose in the air. In related news, have not recently been probed by aliens.

12:32pm: I'm sure many of you have been keeping up with the press that China has been getting lately. No? Well, I'm sure you all at least saw footage of President Hu's visit, complete with falun gong protesting. What you may not know is the fact that the House International Relations Committee has been going over China's human rights violations, even interviewing witnesses to different types of violations committed by China in the past 40 years or so. After doing a little online research, I've discovered how Yahoo! and google, not to mention CISCO have helped China spy on its citizens, then arrest and often torture their prisoners. Yahoo! has handed over email information to the Chinese government so they could prosecute someone for allegedly trying to form a group dedicated to promoting democracy and dissention against the CPC. Both Yahoo! and google have opened up shop in China, which is very different from offering a Chinese version of their search engines from the safety and freedom of the U.S. They have censored their search engines so that a Chinese who looks up words like "falun" or "democracy" or "human rights", they get an error page. Nevermind the fact that democracy and human rights are touted in the Chinese constitution as being guaranteed by the PRC (democracy meaning rule by the proletariat, socialism really, they don't mean it like we do). Is it right that U.S. companies are going to China and promoting the suppression of free speech and free information? The Chinese police are constantly arresting people using evidence from the internet. This has been handed over more than once by Yahoo!. To some people this may seem like a necessity of doing business in foreign countries...obeying local laws. But hundreds of people are being arrested for what we would consider "nothing", then they're being tortured and detained without a prayer of being released any time soon. Many people are being executed. (By the way, here's an interesting tidbit of info from CSPAN...China has a 99% conviction rate). CISCO has actually developed routers for the Chinese government that physically block certain websites from being accessed by cutting off their signal at the Chinese border. CISCO has even trained Chinese police on how to improve their surveillance on the Chinese people! Is this ethical? Do we have a moral obligation not to support this type of behavior??

Many people have heard of the family planning act, which the U.N. sent somewhere around $27 million to support. This is the one child per family law in China. One witness stated that in her rural community, mostly consisting of Uygurs, the PRC has strictly inforced the one child policy, with police literally dragging women to the abortion clinic, often in later termed pregnancies. They are also forced to get sterilized. Some women are given several abortions, like 8 or 9. And this is done in a rural area where there is poor healthcare. The PRC states that the reason they have targeted that particular regions is because they population is getting out of hand. But they are giving incentives for Han Chinese to move into the area! Isn't this called genocide? They are targetting a particular ethnicity, the Uygurs, for extermination! And the U.N. has put its stamp of approval on it!!

Last but now least is the fact that Beijing is hosting the Olympics in 2008. Does the Olympic committee not know how China does things? This is what will happen: before people start arriving for the Olympics and the world's press has focused in on the country, the PRC will release a few political prisoners to show how great they are. Then they will arrest any dissenters they can get their hands on (probably thousands of people) and, if the dissenters are lucky, they will be tortured while in prison then released after the Olympics are over. The Olympics being in Beijing is a HORRIBLE idea! So many people are going to suffer as a result. And the Olympics aren't supposed to be held in a country with problems in the human rights area, and yet the Olympic committee thought it would be great to let Beijing host the Olympics! Even Stephen Spielberg has offered to be a part of the opening ceremonies! What the hell is going on?

This has been troubling me a lot lately. Because anyone who knows me knows that I really have an interest in China. I love studying their history and culture. I am by no means anti-China. Which is why I am so outraged by the fact that these things are going on. Why aren't more people talking about it?

10th April 2006

4:08pm: I finally bought a book I've been trying to get my hands on for years. I ordered "Life and Death in Shanghai" by Nien Cheng, which I reviewed for my Chinese History class several years ago. It's a great autobiographical tale of the Cultural Revolution. It's unique in that Nien Cheng was not your typical Chinese...she was wealthy and went to college in the U.K., two things that made her an easy mark for the proletariats. I highly recommend it for anyone wanting to learn about that period in Maoist China.

I just saw that Edward Rutherfurd has a new book out, "The Rebels of Ireland", which picks up where "The Princes of Ireland" left off. All of Rutherfurd's book are good for people who want to learn about history in a way that's more people-friendly. I'll let you know how it is when I'm done.

John just got a new job (again!), but this time it's a keeper. He's finally going back to the beverage business after a long hiatus. I really think this job will be much more to his liking. And he's excited...so much so that we've started talking about buying a house!

If it weren't for my books right now, I'd be pretty bored. Liz sleeps most of the time. She's doing well, by the way. She gets her first round of vaccinations on Friday. Poor thing.

I really wish certain friends who are currently in Guatemala would come home. =(

12:34pm: Finally the people who are responsible for entertaining me are beginning to do their jobs! Harry Potter comes out Tuesday, and Kingdom Hearts II comes out late this month. At long last. I will have a video game to veg out to, even if I WILL be constantly interrupted by Lizzy. And I will escape the constant temptation to play world of warcraft! haha! WoW, you may have captured the hearts of millions, but I have resisted you! tr180's constant recaps of things happening in the WoW have helped me stave off the temptation to join that elite geek band of, well, geeks. Instead I will become one of those lame geeks who play with Disney characters, but alas, thus is life.

I think I will go open up some new abilities on FF X-2 now.

9:07pm: Well, things have sort of gone back to normal. A new normal, but it's going v. well. I can't wait to be able to excercise! And to be able to really clean my apartment.

I've been toying with the idea of putting off grad school for a while so I can be with Lizzy. I really hate the idea of putting her in day care at such a young age. Especially if John can get a good job soon. I hate the situation we're in right now, but I'm still optimistic. I've been thinking if John can get a great job, maybe we can move back to Birmingham in the fall and we can start getting things together so we can buy a house. But right now I guess it's best if we just take things one day at a time.

I wish I had something else interesting to post about, but all I really do right now is watch Star Trek and nurse my baby. Exciting, huh? I'm hoping to be able to get out more really soon, and maybe even venture to Decatur for a weekend. And I'm DYING for dailern and mrpoonpood to get to see Liz!

Well, I must go now, for I'm being summoned.

10th February 2006

4:56pm: I've been avoiding writing about my delivery because there's just SO much to tell, so I decided to give the short, brisk version.

So I go into labor on January 31st and go to the hospital around midnight. I labor for 24 hours before the doctors tell me I'm not progressing enough because my pelvis is too narrow for the baby to go through. By the time they tell me this, I've been on pitocin all day, had my water broken, and gotten my epidural. The epidural, by the way, was NOT working, and I could still feel my contractions. So they tell me I have to have a c-section. I reluctantly agree, but begin to majorly freak out because a) I don't want to have surgery, b) I don't want to have surgery while I'm awake, and c) um, the epidural's not freaking working! So they wheel me out, I lose all vestiges of my dignity and begin weeping uncontrollably, and they begin prepping me for surgery. I keep telling them I can feel my stomach, and after several tear filled pleas, they finally believe me. Then they put me under general anesthesia, but before I go under, my lungs just stop working (at least it felt that way) and I start screaming (not really screaming, since I couldn't breath that well, but I was trying!) that I can't breath. I think I'm going to die, then I lose consciousness.

I wake up in recovery much later. I don't remember a whole lot about that night, but apparently I lost a bunch of blood during my surgery because I have fibroid tumors on my uterus. The doctors keep asking me how I feel about a blood transfusion. I told them I felt pretty crappy about it, actually, and ask if there's an alternative. They put me on a bunch of liquids and iron pills. The first time I looked at myself in the mirror was a shock. My skin, previously dark red with blood from being pregnant, was vampire white. I didn't even have color underneath my fingernails.

A week and 2 days later, I'm feeling a lot better. My incision is healing well, my daughter is doing great (more on her later, but if you wanna see her, go to babyliz), and my palms have a faint tinge of pink to them. My doctor told me if I have another baby, I'll have to have a c-section again because if I go through labor again there's a good possibility that my uterus may rupture. So tr180 and I will have to have a serious discussion about whether or not we'll be having any more kids.

But I DO have to say one thing about the experience...thank GOD I'm not pregnant anymore!!!

31st January 2006

3:44pm: Harry Potter News??!!!
Could I be posting HP news after all this time???? And while I'm 40 weeks pregnant?? It's insane! But true. Turns out JK Rowling auctioned off a Black Family Tree, and there are pictures of it. And a "Dorea" (1920-1977) married a certain Charles Potter! The dates indicate it could be James's parents. Go here to see a photo!

tr180 thinks maybe this is why Harry could inherit Grimmauld Place after all. Of course, in the book, it states that the house would go to the next Black, but since there wasn't one, it goes to the oldest of the Black family, which would be Bellatrix. But of course, Sirius could have left it to Narcissa, I'm sure of it, so why couldn't he leave it to Harry, even if it had some sort of spell? I mean, he's got Black blood, too!
