Let me start out by saying that I have never been to the states. Being a young impressionable Canadian, I have heard nothing but praise for America. That being said, I doubted the value of me going to Seattle. Seattle is the capital of Washington state, and about a two hour drive from the border. I was going there with my mom to see my brother who was in the city for a couple days for an interview with Microsoft.
Let's start at the beginning.
I woke up at 4 in the morning. Oh god. It took my mom about two hours to shower, eat, and get ready, while it took me about ten minutes to do my own personal equivalent of these activities. We left for Schwartz
Bay, got the 8:00 ferry. Change machine was broken, so I had to buy something. Then I headed towards the arcade for an hour and a half of soul-crushing gaming. Mostly, I focused my attention on a little game called Strikers 1945. My main thoughts while playing were "Hey! Send some more bullets my way because sweet fuck there aren't enough on the screen already".
I left the ferry a hollow shell of my former self. We then drove half an hour to the border, where we waited for about an hour. Then, since I had no picture ID, we had to go to Immigrations. We stood there among, as my mother sweetly put it, all the "dark skins". I got interrigated (spelling?), then let through. We were now in the good old U S of A.
We drove for two more hours to Seattle. One of those hours was with the soothing sounds of CBC, the other with the equally pleasing Coldplay. Then we got to Seattle, thank god.
Let me say something about Seattle. It's pretty much Vancouver. It's America's version of Vancouver. As such, it is bigger, smellier, and instead of the mass ammounts of Asians that seem to spawn on the west coast of Canada, it is full of black people. At least that's what I was told. I didn't see that many black people. But they were there. Some were smoking cigars, some were busking. It was glorious. But anyway.
Like I was saying, Seattle is basically Vancouver. In fact, god help me, it may be better than Vancouver. Let me explain why. In a list of least cool to most cool.
1. Pike Place Market.
2. This one comic shop that is oh sweet shit full of everything I could ever want. Srsly. There's even a hentai section. I got a couple Sin City things.
3. My first clue that there was an anime convention was seeing a girl dressed as sailor moon walking down the street. But hey, I thought, this is Seattle. It could just be some sort of ultra-nerd. But as we walked up the street, the Clouds and Guys From Bleach and Generic Look At Me I'm Wearing Japanese Clothes got more and more prominent. Then a couple blocks away, I saw outside a big glass building a big blue object. At first I though to myself "No... it couldn't be" but then I looked closer, and it was. It was a big huge Sonic Hedgehog mascot guy. I was joyful. My brother later realized that it was Sakura Con. It was pretty cool. There was a Subway next door to the Convention Center, and a perpetual line up to said eatery.
4. This is the greatest fucking thing I've fucking seen in my fucking life. I forget what it was called, but right across from the convention center was the most groin-tinglingly awesome arcade ever. I takes up one square city block, multiple floors, so very many games. Under the circumstances, it was full of anime fans. I saw some girl in the "Retro Game" room dressed as Miles "Tails" Prower. And I saw someone who I swear to god looked exactly like steph. It was freaky. I was in the arcade for ten minutes (Sadly, we were just passing through) and I don't think I saw half of it. Oh man. I'm still pumped about it.
For these reasons, and more, I have decided that I am in love with Seattle and intend to set up residence there was soon as possible. Srsly.
Not much happened for the rest of the day. We went to my brother's hotel, where we ate hotel burgers and watched The Ring 2 on the hotel TV. Then we went back to Canada, missed the ferry, and waited in line for two hours. Got home, fell asleep.
As much as I love Vancvouer and Canada and the like, I was pleasantly suprised. I give Seattle fives stars. |

I totally haven't updated here for a long time, but I can assure you that you're not missing much. Today I went with Taylor and Jeremy and Devin while they played a Neopets CCG. I wasn't worried at being caught by a teacher so much as I was worried about being caught watching people play a NEOPETS CARD GAME. There's only so much nerdiness you can stand before your mind starts to literally melt out of your ears.
Dammit Kyle. Every time I try to go on your stupid forum it shuts down Internet Explorer. Bah!

So, yeah. I was already on my way to Elijah's when my dad got the call that it was cancelled. So I got there in the pouring rain, only to find that I was the only one. So his parents gave me soup. Then I took the bus home. So all in all, I got free soup out of the deal. |
