State prepares to challenge polar bear listing in court
The State of Alaska is going to court over the Interior Secretary's decision to list polar bears as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act.
Governor Sarah Palin announced Wednesday that the state plans to file the suit in U. S. District Court for the District of Columbia.
She says the state is also considering intervening in ongoing litigation related to the polar bear listing in the court for the Northern District of California.
While the state is challenging the listing, Governor Palin says Alaska remains committed to assuring polar bears are conserved.
Natural Resources Commissioner Tom Irwin warns the listing decision could result in widespread social and economic impacts, including power costs and further increases in fuel prices.
Attorney General Talis Colberg believes the Endangered Species Act is not the right tool to address impacts to a species from climate change.
