7:21p - 12 hours in the hole
There is nothing quite like shift work. 12 straight hours of trying to stay alert and coherent. I'm really okay when we're on midshifts - 6 PM to 6 AM. I like working nights - I stay up for three days at a time and then crash for a day. I feel like I do a lot more.

Day shifts are miserable. We switched back to days this week and I'm just hoping that all the parts of my brain solidify back into the right places as I sleep tonight.

I find that the day generally goes well if I don't start looking at my watch until one.

Today, I started looking at my watch at 8. 10 hours to go, and already starting to lose it. Good thing there's usually a cutoff for the pain...

7 o'clock: still getting settled in.
8 o'clock: you've got your balls up in the air and you're working
(I know some guys at work who do a fairly good literal impression of this)
9 o'clock: you're getting work done at a fairly good clip, now
10 o'clock: your attention wanes a bit, so you get up and do a round of socializing
11 o'clock: only an hour to kill until the middle of the day
12 o'clock: get some food, wander outside to smoke (which I don't) or play a video game
1 o'clock: first round of hallway golf; people's jokes are starting to get funny
2 o'clock: some more work, even more golf; production begins another downslide
3 o'clock: in-depth argument about what you call "soda," the word "tonic" is hilarious
and you don't know why
4 o'clock: you make a stupid typo and it's the funniest thing ever
5 o'clock: you realize how tired you are and want to go home, so you try to do some
work to pass the time. However, you couldn't concentrate enough to follow
the plot of a Disney movie right now, so you manage to count every last
minute on the clock.
6 o'clock: Your relief comes in, you run out the door and get home only to realize that
you're too fucking wired to sleep. Hell.

7:24p - Bet you didn't know they did this too...
New Motto of the Armed Forces:

We have nothing better to do than tell you who you should and shouldn't keep in your personal life! It's not like there's a war on or anything!

current mood: annoyed
current music: Public Enemy's "Nation of Millions..."
