EVE'S BAYOU (1997) by Kasi Lemmons This story set in 1962 Louisiana concerns the childhood of two sisters.
The story is told by the point of view by 10-year-old Eve Baptiste. It involves her relationship with her entire family...her mother, her father, and especially her older sister Cisley. It is a sometimes violent, sometimes loving examination of what happened in that certain summer. The film explores these relationships with the unnerving undercurrent of incest that is ever present.
The Big Theme of the film is Memory--how much we can trust it and how it effects our lives. Lemmons uses all sorts of cinematic techniques to explore this. What scenes stood out for you and why? How did Lemmons utilize these techniques so that what YOU see is trustworthy or not...just like Eve's narrative. |
