6:51 am - Constantine...and DriveSHAFT
Scifiwire's story on the upcoming film Constantine from the POV of Rachel Weis, that wonderful actress from (among other films) the Mummy movies. I sure hope that Constantine is good. We'll find out soon...

And for those with fond memories of the Banzai Institute Web Site, the web site for that electronics company featured on The Lone Gunmen TV series, and the website of that Rimbaldi fanatic group...here's the DriveSHAFT band web site. DriveSHAFT is, of course, the fictional band of which Charlie, a character on Lost is a member. "DriveSHAFT's" music has been featured on JJ Abrams other series, Alias.

8:52 am - I'm back
After taking a hiatus for a while (real life…sigh), suddenly there’s so much genre news that I can’t resist posting again!

Yes, Enterprise is cancelled. Go to Yahoo's news site and see about 5 or 6 articles on the topic. But I'm more interested in what might come next as far as fantasy/scifi on TV.

The V miniseries in development is apparently going to go the remake route instead of a sequel. Ken Johnson says, "The World War Two references have been replaced by much more recent incidents from the dark side of humanity. This has allowed me to sustain the underlying power of historic resonance that made the original so compelling and so well-received by critics and audiences alike.". Now THAT is interesting, I wonder which "incidents from the dark side of humanity he is referring to?"

And...Pirates of the Caribbean sequel news.

Anime News Network reports that the US premiere of Howl's Moving Castle is set for June 10th. at the El Capitan Theater in Hollywood.

2:44 pm - A couple of genre tidbits...
We started our second week of performances last night (Wed, Thur, Friday nights, 4 on Saturday and the last 2 on Sunday).

Here's a couple of genre tidbits from SciFiWire

Shawn Ashmore (Bobby/Iceman) discusses the third X-Men movie plans now that Brian Singer is no longer involved.

And, is a new Babylon 5 theatrical movie on the way?

12:38 pm - Where have you been, Liz
Well, I've been a part of the cast for Glorious Christmas Nights.

From the Saturday after Thanksgiving through the next weekend, I was either at practice or doing performances every night...4 performances on Saturday and 3 on Sunday.

So, I've been a little busy the last few weeks.

11:11 am - Last Exile DVD 6: Finally!
Well, I finally got the Last Exile 6 DVD this week, after contacting Digital Eyes about the media mail shipment not arriving (but then it did, after all...the same day as the second DVD that was shipped!). I've sent one back to Digital Eyes, so all is well.

Except that I am a little disappointed by the DVD...it's pretty obvious, to me at least, that this was one group of episodes where the budget went tight. The animation is just not nearly as nice as the earlier episodes of the series (and neither is the illustration istelf, since the illustration of some of the characters seems inconsistent). The last episode on the disc shows a little improvement...leading into the final DVD, which I'm still eagerly anticipating.

11:08 am - Underworld News
Dark Horizons and Moviehole have announced that Derek Jacobi has been signed to play the lead villian in the Underworld sequel, rumored to be the character of Marcus (referred to but not seen in the original film).

I'm a little surprised at the choice, since Jacobi is sixty-something (vampires not aging and all that). However, he is a big name (and a respected one) to attach to the project, no doubt about that.

4:27 pm - A couple of genre tidbits from AintItCool...
Ewan McGregor just might be the new James Bond. Well, it MIGHT get me back into the theatres for the first time in years, as far as a Bond flic goes. But I'm still doubtful.

And a story about attempts to film I am Legend -- including the disturbing news that there is actually a Poseiden Adventure remake being filmed (why, oh dear Lord, why?)

8:06 pm - The joys of liveblogging!
Thanks to the wonders of wireless internet installed at our church, I'm liveblogging from rehearsal tonight. Actually, I'm wasting time, because this crummy piece-of-junk laptop PC from work is highly tempermental when undocked from the work setup. And I'm scared to death that if I keep my jumpdrive-of-works-in-progress hooked up to the USB port, that I will lose my National Novel Writing Month book in progress to disk corruption (in addition to a tasty fanfic in progress).

So, instead I'll liveblog a little and then go visit some of my favorite places online, and perhaps do some more research for my novel.

We're doing the 1920's scenes right now, and I'm not needed till the 1950's (grins)

11:38 am - And now for a little common sense...
From InstaPundit, and my only fairly direct comment on the elections today...other then to remind fellow U.S. Citizens to vote.

Thank you, Michael Totten, for a little common sense. Seldom seen in recent days, and sorely needed in the realm of public discourse.

ELECTION DAY REMINDERS: Let’s get a couple of things out of the way before today’s votes are counted.

You have the right to vote. You do not have the right to see the man of your choice in the White House.

If George W. Bush wins the election, the world will still spin on its axis. Canada will not grant you asylum. If John Kerry wins the election, America will still be America. Australia will not grant you asylum.

People who vote for the other guy aren’t stupid, brainwashed, or evil. They are your friends and family. Someone you love will almost certainly cancel your vote. (My wife cancels out mine.)

If, by some chance, everyone you know votes for the loser it won’t mean the election was stolen. It will only show that you live in a bubble.

If this thing is close (the victor could easily win by 0.1 percent) try not to read too much into it. We’ll still be closely divided.

If the election doesn’t go your way, don’t pop off as though America were Guatemala under the generals. You’ll get lots of attention, but it won’t be the kind you want. People will laugh, not near you but at you.

11:45 am - November is here...
And the start of the holiday movie season. I can't remember a recent holiday season where I was actually excited about so many films rated for family audiences.

This week, of course, marks the opening of "The Incredibles" -- I may be looking forward to this film more then any previous Pixar movie, and that says A LOT.

"The Polar Express" opens November 10 -- this one is not on my "catch it or die" list, but I do hope it's entertaining.

I'm looking forward to the thriller "National Treasure" which has surprisingly gotten a PG rating. Opens November 19.

And then, of course, the one can't-miss film for me this season...December 17, " Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events."

2:49 pm - Rate the superheros...
this is a bit old, but it's new to me, because I just discovered her blog, which is pretty funny, and overall very interesting (I'm sure people will be blowing their top at her declaration of who she's voting for next week).

Meryl Yourish rates the superheros.

9:05 am - Sci-fi comes to real life
Allerca, Inc. is now taking advance orders for hypoallerganic cats.

For just $3500, you can reserve a feline bundle of joy that will not provoke sneezes and asthma (for $3500 I hope it comes with at least a 5-year lifespan guarantee, and how about custom fur colors as well?)

8:57 am - More Angel on the way?
According to DarkHorizons.com, the WB Network is having serious second thoughts about their decision last year to cancel Angel.

The problem with some kind of comeback, though, is that a lot of the cast has moved on. And David Boreanaz, it seems, is about as enthuiastic about returning to the character of Angel as Sarah Michelle Gellar is about returning to the character of Buffy.

Here's the link to the article, and here's a link to an article on SciFi Wire about why SMG wasn't involved with the proposed Buffy toon.

1:22 pm - genre news
Darkhorizons.com is reporting that USA Network has officially renewed The 4400 with an 13-episode order to air in the summer of 2005. The fact that this makes me somewhat happy illustrates just how little halfway decent genre drama is on TV right now.

And Dark Horizons has some info on the in-production Superman film which sounds like its going to be a sequel of sorts to Superman II. While SciFi.com reports from Cinescape Online that both Angel alumni actresses (Amy Archer and Charisma Carpenter) are in the running for the part of Lois Lane. Those ladies (or, more accurately, their characters on Angel have been the topic of conversation at our house recently as my daughters work their way through the final season of Angel in reruns. As in, "how come all the girls have to die, Mom?" from my 11 year old.

Meanwhile the SciFi Network PR machine fires up for Tin Man, an alternative universe miniseries inspired by The Wizard of Oz. But, hey, guys, what's going on with that live-action version of Witch Hunter Robin that was supposively in development?

And here's a look at the new Dr. Who logo. I guess that will eventually air on SciFi in the US as well. Hopefully we'll have digital cable againi at that point.

And a final tidbit. Darkhorizons is also reporting that the Farscape miniseries DVD will be released in January. I won't comment on the miniseries till I see it. A friend's son was supposed to record it for me...she's out of town, and I'll wait till she gets back to see if he came through. Plus, I'm too busy this week to take the time to watch it.

3:52 pm - Do the Tolkienites need to be as silly as Trekkers and 'Scapers?
ScifiWire reports

The OneRing.net Web site is asking Lord of the Rings fans to commemorate the Oct. 21 50th anniversary of the first U.S. publication of J.R.R. Tolkien's masterpiece by showing up in costume at the studios of the Today show in New York.

Please, dear Lord, no! Do fans of LOTR really need to take a page from the books of fans of Star Trek and Farscape?

12:48 pm - NEWTYPE DVD returns!
NewType magazine is a beautiful, but expensive, monthly exploration of the world of anime. November marks the 2nd anniversary of the US version of the magazine.

A couple of months ago, NewType decided to discontinue one of the most notable features of the magazine, a monthly DVD with previews of new anime series (usually the first episode of one or two series, plus trailers). This alone was almost worth the price of the magazine, depending on which series were included. And...it was a LEGAL way for anime-lovers to sample new series before purchasing the first DVD.

Well, NewType readers have spoken (likely with their wallets, like me, since I haven't bought the magazine myself for two months!) and starting in November, the DVD returns.

That's the good news.

The bad news is that the cover price increases to $12.98 per issue. Steep.

8:23 am - The commercial takeover of Dark Horizons
darkhorizons.com is one of the most active news sites for the world of genre film (and occasionally television). Unfortunately, in the last few months, the site has become increasingly taken over by advertising. First it was "themed" front pages (the most recent example being Team America.) Now, it's ads that appear upon clicking a link to read a news story, requiring another click to get to the actual story.

I guess it pays the bills, but I for one miss being able to actually get to a news story without having to figure out my way around all the advertising.

2:15 pm - Do you think some of the fanfiction.net authors are a little young, perhaps?
Sepaking of rehearsals, I was at one a few days ago, and a young friend came and sat by me. I was reading a book on writing young adult ficiton, and she promptly told me she's a writer...of Inuyasha and Harry Potter fanfiction. Which she publishes on fanfiction.net.

She's not even 13 years old yet!

She wasn't aware of what "Mary Sues" were and I promptly educated her on the subject.
