i cant bear to leave this place. "bumblebee" template. the yellow and black. the white against the black illuminated my thoughts. the absence of music to set whichever mood u desire against whichever entry u read. the icon, saved and left there after much croppin from this computer idiot, taken from fictional character Noel Crane from Felicity from a fictional webbie. i loved it. the simplicity. the thought bubble. the border. the cute crane.
i'll be back.

Shawn says i need a positive friend beside me. someone who's gonna cheer me up, tell me jokes, tell me stories i've never heard. cos i've a drowning soul inside. times when i make u smile r jus better times. i'm so ordinary. i have my down side too.

12:14 am - Discovering Hong Kong!
|
my HK trip. here's the highlights.
great moments and stuff.
this is my first meal in HK upon arrival. pai-gu chicken feet rice. i never knew how to eat chicken feet, cos my mum says hands will shake if u eat them. but i guess it's an auspicious opening meal.以 形bu形. great thing about the service in HK is tt their waiteresses expect u to order even before u snuggle ya but to the shape of the chair. i guess they must have a huge crowd to cater to, hence the urge. first meal was met with hesitation cos Ben and TY didnt know how to read the chi words. so mix tt with translator Mel and u get a couple of vexed, eager waitresses awaiting to serve u. and they serve their food like poof! instantly! u dun even have time to wash ya hands first! oh. and dun drink the tea. they're usually for washing ya spoons n utensils. unless u're dining in a posh place tt is.
my first dinner. they have special prices for meals after 9.30pm. so we tried this Brazilian BBQ restaurant for bout 45HKD (9 SGD). buffet. very worth it.
and there's 2 men walkin ard tables, askin for requests. it's so sweet, cos 1st table kicked things off with "endless love". it was an acoustic version of it, which made it all the more sweeter and lovely. it was an "awwwww" moment for me. sweet. i tot of dedicating "yesterday once more" at the last min, but they didnt come to our table. they were great entertainers too. teasing this lady at the next table. haha. and the waiter is cute they way he serves the food la. haha.

i tell u, no night is complete without tryin the desert stall near out hotel. there's like a million choices, and i bet each of them is terrific la. Ben even talked of franchising it to Spore. why didnt anyone do it?!?!!? anw, the highlight is of cos 楊枝甘露. the very name induces curiosity. and such a rhyming name with a ring to it! in the end, it became a source for all jokes.
OCEAN PARK. a must-go for all tourists. there's jus so much to see.....

lovely breath-takin view from atop the cable car. wat a great place to propose and share a great kiss. no elevator music, no noisy amusement park kids. jus a sea view and great company. definitely a highlight.

our first stop was at the Ocean Theatre. the band was playin some banjo-salsa music to a stunning backdrop. it really got me in the mood.

then came the real deal: the dolphin and sea lion show. to tell u the truth, i almost teared while watchin the dolphins perform the stunts. i dunno wat got to me. it's jus another normal animal show to set to cheesy sound effects. but somehow there's jus so much beauty. in how the trainers must have got a perfect relationship with the animals. in how obedient the animals were. in how they can perform something out of their league. its ironic. theirs was a simple relationship driven by food. yet such marvels came out of it.

i had so much fun at the rides i didnt wana go away. if not for Ben n TY, who dun enjoy rides. sigh. i wld love to go on the ferris wheel la. but well, we took the Abyss, as shown above. the Viking, and the roller coaster. i was most afraid of the viking la. cos there's no upper body support, and since young at Sentosa, i always tot i'd fall and die. hee. Abyss was thrilling for tt moment it first came down. but the view from the top was extraordinary. there's loads of Eng school kids there. here's an interesting conversation, which sounded hilarious in real-life.
loud-mouth:(after much shouting) hey! her uncle tried the Abyss 3 times! girl-in-abyss-seat: really? how was it? loud-mouth: oh her uncle tried it(points at fren).
=after the ride=
loud-mouth: (shouting again) hey! so how was it!?!?!?! girl-in-abyss: (dismal and too in-shock i guess, silently mumbles) WHATEVER.
haha....i dunno why but its so hilarious when i heard it. i must have been on a high already then.
oh and i saw this!!! i use to love playin this at arcades!!! now its extinct in Spore already! =( and wat strong water! haha...(insert private urinal jokes here).
Mac on a hot afternoon? ewwww.....
the atoll reef aquarium was MAGNIFICANT la. from the viewing gallery it's jus a whole "under the sea" right in front of u, like the whole ocean! really! so many fishes la!

eerie jellyfishes! they're not really in colour. its the lights. and can u see the face in the last pic?
this Indian lady was dancing away to the blue screen with her kid. like true-blue Indian moves, sans hands raised with head bobs! hilarious la!

these people are tryin to "wipe out pollution".

 lovely backdrop.
i'm tired already. and i'm not even halfway done. tsk tsk. i need to censor myself heavily. shall continue next time.

12:54 am - goodbye.
|
i'm flyin off in a few hours. 6am flight, leaving home at 3.30am.
i am unprepared. my bag is not packed, my toothbrush's still out. i keep thinking of things i might have missed but nothing seems to be getting thru.
ARGH!!!!!! this is a weird weird trip la. just.........weird. an unusual gang, an unusual mood. i keep tellin myself, let spontaneity rule! but URGH! i hate the unknown sometimes.
i hope this turns out to be the best trip of my life. seriously.
i spent a good half of the morning watchin Madonna's I'm Gonna Tell You A Secret in my shop. such luxury only comes by when Her Highness is on off. tsk tsk. it's v v nicely done, a side to her i've nv seen. the intellectual/ philosophical/maternal/introspective side. smart move. Jonas the director is freakin sharp la(i tink he directed the freakin Ray Of Light mtv. friggin good). the mood was jus there thruout. either tt, or cos i watched it while standing. but the black/white effect was lovely. sometimes it's funny hearin certain things comin out of her mouth, like she's TRYIN to be smart. but it's not hard to see why she's THE icon of our era. in control~
now her "do not do unto others what u wld not do unto yaself" philosophy is stuck with me.
ok i need to pack. i haven wrote my d-letters. hee. i'll do it on the plane.
like in fashion, "one minute u're in, the next u're out".
so "Carry on" and "Make it work"!
pray i dun crash n burn. choychoychoy.
Auf Wiedersehen.

|
i pierced my ear.
yes, my first body piercing. after heaps of peer pressure from colleague/"good" friend SHAWN, a promise tt i'll "look younger", and a very trusting/experienced shopkeeper from X-Craft, i succumbed to vanity and sado-masochism. tryin out new things can be such adrenalin boosters la.it wasnt dead painful, thou i was rather worried before it. Shawn said i had no expressions on my face, no sign of pain la. haha...tt's cos it was bearable la. or i have too much "ba" around my ear-lope. anycase the boss gave me a good discount(cos he's friends with my sup. ah. . . the advantage of networking)of $2.50 instead of the usual $4.50 i heard of. i'm still tryin to get used to the new look. am still unsure if it really suits me. cos i tink the hair's not matchin the ears. haha. silly talk.
anyway, on a higher note, Mr Keay did his personal best by sms-ing me 4 long sms! haha...at various stages of replies of cos. and i'm gonna get a free treat if Holland wins/draws tonight against Argentina. i'm not gonna be courteous and take a small treat! i wanted a big one and he agreed la. but after hearin fr world-cup fanatic mr Qng QJ tt its 99% impossible, i feel like slappin Mr Keay la. haha...but there's still a chance(QJ told me 99% cos he DIDNT WANA LOSE $$ RITE! haha). so i'll sit and wait patiently for free meal to drop by. *slurpz* cant wait for (pirate)movie marathon at his place.

whenever somebody makes the "you only live once why be sad/live for the day/treasure the moment" speech, it makes me wana pick up the phone and ring everybody up, tell them how much i love them, hug a lot of ppl, and wish i had the chance to spend more time with them. tt sudden adrenalin rush, thou fleeting, is just one of the many reminders tt life's too short to relish in the things tt didnt matter.
so the next time u pass ya judging eyes on someone, ask yaself if it's ever tt important to begin with. who are we to judge how another lives? i need alot of training on that.
my life is full of regrets, as i've come to realise. there's simply too much to accomplish. and while they're all imaginatively-realised in my conscious, reality somehow doesnt give in to the easy way. i've yet to learn a musical instrument other than the pathetic recorder. i've yet to read enough books. i've yet to travel the world. i wish i cld have confessed my love for people. i wish i cld have worked harder in my studies and not end up in this pathetic slump. i wish i had made more of a difference during my council days. i wish i had more positive influence on people than i ever did.
sometimes i wonder if i live in the wrong era. perhaps if i happen to be living in another century, i might have been more appreciated.
given all former rants, i still do believe i am fortunate. if i compare myself to those less fortunate. and there's seriously plenty. so why am i such an uncontented idiot? i know....self deprecation is not exactly the best form of therapy. and i hate sympathy. but, for lack of a more eloquent/elegant justification, this is jus how it is.
i shall get down to writting farewell-letters before i fly to HK. pardon the morbid idea. i've been having it for a long time already anyways. so there's nv a beta time, given i'm travellin by budget airline this time. touch wood pls. i dun wish to die thou.
i started out with a positive entry in mind. i am clueless how it turned out to be sucha stoner. haha. oh well. i need a new blogskin like TallOne's. lovely lar hers. anyone wana help? i'm a tech-idiot~!
and i'm on a jason mraz high after seeing Joaqim perform Geek In The Pink on Spore Idol. fantastic la! i'm gonna support him!!! damn man,.....i sld have caught Mr Mraz when he was here earlier. urgh. see, another regret. + KOC gig. + Damien Rice gig. + tt Faye Spore concert i missed! triple urgh!!!

2:29 am - gratitude
|
it's my off day today. zonked after quiz night yesterday @ Bishan, thou it was great fun. Yam ring + claypot tofu was delicious.
went for a jog this morning after a significantly overdue hiatus. 2 rds around the neighbourhood. can feel my muscle aching la. terribly unfit. and the crunches made my neck hurt. i forgot the SAF warmup for the most part. terrible. i worry about IPPT.
did nothin much after. caught The Deer Hunter and prepared the presents. it's a 3 hrs long movie. abit disappointed cos the pace was real slow. and besides the human roulette scenes tt really made me sit up, it's a rather disappointing Best Picture winner. perhaps its the time gap. it's a 1978 film. but i watch it for Meryl Streep. it wasnt a v flashy role. but she's a ravishing sight to behold. Uma Thurman looks kinda like a young Meryl. so does Helen Hunt.
then went to Holland V for Nerd's bday celebration. it's a great gang. good company, ok food, less than sizzling service cos the waiter was new. nonetheless it was great fun. can see nerd was touched after all the efforts.
finally got down to settling my uni admission. and a painful revelation tt i'm unable to pay with my parents' CPF resulted in a much ugly situation with mum over the phone. she blamed me for my negligence and my inability to prioritise this matter by stayin at home and waitin for her to come back and discuss it with her. so i told her over the phone, but it wldnt make a huge difference i suppose. after a heated conversation(she always has a hostile tone), it was a period of zonkin out. for a while i contemplated giving up this opportunity, work for another yr, save up enuf before i start education again. it didnt seem like a terrible idea either. and the wait for NTU's delayed reply with regards to my appeal left me in a complicated state. i had no one to turn to. i do not know who to ask with regards to loans and all. so i sms Zif. a curious part of me thought he might be facin a similar dilemma. but he's doin fine. so after a while, i decided to ask PY for advice. it was a desperate attempt. she enlightened me with regards to bank loans and how it's not as complicated a process as i had envisioned it to be. blame it on my ignorance. turns out anyone above 21 can be my guarantor. it took a huge load off my shoulder, cos now i have an option. and wat touched me more was how willingly py and mh agreed to be my guarantor. MH also offered to loan me if ever i needed anything. i was really really really surprised and touched. i'm not one who likes takin favours. besides the huge embarrassment, i was deeply gratituous. beyond comprehension. ineffable.
i felt like burryin my face in my hands and sob the hell out when even xz bothered to render his help if ever i needed anything. he of all ppl, the seemingly most bo-chap of all.
it's a revelatory night. sounds cliche, but its true when they say u know who ya friends r thru tough times. i really am a fortunate fortunate ass. so fortunate i missed the beauty around me all the times, and get messed up in a world tt didnt matter; in the things tt clouded my vision. i still feel a lil undecided, cos this whole thing is jus messin with my head. i might jus have to make it on my own this time. without my parents. it'll be tough. but it's gotta be done. it's a terrible feeling, really. not knowing which path to choose, feelin lost and jaded. but i'm thankful. i have many ppl to be grateful with. i cant thank them enough, and i hope by being a better friend, i'll be able to repay kindness with more kindness.
=(
arh. i'm a mess. revel in the photos ba.

3:52 am - nocturnal
|
i've been terribly nocturnal these few days. my neck is aching. my eye bags are showing. but i'm still hanging on. ktv yesterday till 3 with colleagues, x-men 3 today(finally) with silly, and Mambo Nite tml!! den i'll rest on thursday. 1 x long sleep + dvds catching up. yummy.
X3 looked promising initially but it didnt deliver as much as i had expected. it was action-packed, and visually spectacular at certain scnenes. but somehow the intrigue of the mutants' powers were lost. i was excited to see Angel fly for the first time, tt sonic boom thing towards the end, Beast doin some fighting other than smart-talk, and Kitty moving thru walls. but there wasnt enough! only 6 pathetic crew in the xmen?!?!?! come on.
and i detest the notion of action heroes dying. thou touted as the finale, it wasnt as apocalyptical as it strive out to be. let Apocalypse come in! that will be interesting! drop in a few sentinels! oh wel, too much for a 2 hr flick. back to "death". heroes dyin like poppin candies are jus so casually done la. Charles: dead b4 half-time.wat?!?!? man. and i dun see enough of everyone. delicious Mystique was reduced to a mere extended cameo( is it worth all the time consumed for her make-up?!?!). angel flew like only 3 times(and only a few shots of amazed people with the sight). juggernaut looks like a flintstone character la. and tt "cure" character wasnt fully developed!!! tt has gotta be the biggest disappointment. Beast was cooool. but it reeks of Frasier banter. so a little pity there too.
good points? storm has great hair. and great body. Jean Grey was deliciously wicked. love the crimson outfit. Ian McKellen as Magneto. osmehow i hate vulnerability in villains, but castin him was perfect perfect perfect. Charles Xavier. slick.
oh well. it wasnt tt great of a Last Stand after all. i miss Bryan Singer. and wat an irony cos the Superman Returns trailer b4 the film was slickly done like a mini-movie. cant wait for the Kevin Spacey- Bryan Singer team again. Kevin as Lex Luthor looks sinister enough to kill. pray that Brandon Routh, in all his comic-boy looks reminiscent of Tom Welling aka Smallville, dun screw things up.
gtg sleep to the sounds of Joni. tank goodness i'm workin at JP tml.

10:02 pm - world premiere
|
off days are almost as mechanical as work days it seems. it's either the usual pop-by in town/chinatown for cds and sales and Chippy (oh how i miss the fish&chips!!!), or stay-ins fixing my eyes on the Box. today's the former. and the blib in the "exhilarating" day is tt i trimmed and dyed my hair. world premiere world premiere! it's a copperish-brown colour, not very obvious. but i love the subtlety of it and the cut's real nice. makes my head look small i tink. slick. and it smells great now. but hair dyes r chokingly-stinky. and wat a great deal i got out of my fren's mum: a mere $32 only!! wholy crap!
went Chinatown and got Karen Mok's new album + Sigur Ros' Takk. the promo lines on the cover made it sound like a great album(like all promo lines sld), but it's a 1st class cheat. i was disappointed cos 4 songs were covers of english songs, 2 of which i recognised them to be Jem's 24 and beloved Rachel Yamagata's "be be your love". the Rachel cover sounded promising in the first 2 lines with her sexy low voice, but it jus became a mess towards the chorus, lacking the tragicness of the original. sigh. it only makes me wana listen to the original more now. however however, there were a few jems in it. "am pm" with its lush cello, "hands" with its thoughtful lyrics. i love her voice man.
HMV had a major makeover. the visual section was moved to 3rd floor, eating into chi pop's space. bad sign for asian pop. the new jazz section looks slick, replacing the previous hip hop sector.
i caught 3 movies the past week.
The Family Stone

i still dun get the grammatical error in the title. it's the Stone family, so why do they call it "family stone"? and there's no real rock significance or deep insight into alcoholism/gettin stoned, so why is it called THE FAMILY STONE? not The Stone Family? not The Family, Stone? not Stone, The Family?
anw, it's a light hearted family xmas comedy starrin Sex and The City alum Sarah Jessica Parker. SJP's an uptight business woman tt makes throat-clearing seem like the ugliest, most disturbing in the universe. she's hilarious and pulled it off, with her bunned up hair and vein-revealin neck and business wear.
i love Diane Keaton. her offbeat dress sense, her quirkiness, even her serious side.
Claire Danes was basically being Claire Danes. she cant get past My So-called Life. and i wonder why they put her name first on the dvd.
the scene stealer here is Rachel McAdams, who basically plays another bitch-like character here tt's devilish fun. the Guessin Game scene was great.
and i love the xmas gift towards the end. lovely lovely lovely.
so it's not exactly the greatest movie, nor a very good xmas flick. but the ensemble made it a joy to watch, despite it's flwas. a get-together film.
Match Point

the man who said "i'd rather be lucky than good" saw deep into life
Woddy oh Woody. in his first dabble in a country outside of the US (he made NYC a film icon), what was touted as a return-to-form is a lush, sexy, smart thriller about a young lad's rise up the social ladder. However, i felt there's still some loopholes.
Jonathan Rhys Myers has terrific blue eyes and is a pleasure to watch. 1 great scene was when he was cryin over the sins he've committed. the torment and the anguish. but i felt there could have been more desperation in his actions, a stronger desire to succeed. one may argue tt the final act proved his desperation, but tt's only in his action. it wasnt written in his eyes, tt fire to leech onto the rich and famous. it seemed he was jus being at the right place at the right time, which, in a way, makes sense too since the whole idea was about luck. but it could have been more dramatic, without being over-played.
Scarlett Johansson, on the other hand, got out of control in the 2nd half of the film. a seductress with a "come-hither" look, she was reduced to a ranting nuisance in the 2nd half. there wasnt rage. jus mere irritation at JRM not spending enough time with her. wat a pity. her role could have been more subtle even with the dilemma she's facing. she's the outcast of the emsemble, with her being the only American. with a face like hers, she's still ravishing enough to keep my eyes glued.
Emily Mortimer is great to watch too, as the ever nice wife who was never reduced to a jealous wife. thou she was unaware of the affair, it made her character more pitiable and dramatic with her incessantly mechanical ways.
side-tracking, the comment on the back of the dvd was quite funny. i mean, who'd quote from Maxim?!?!?! it's not exactly the best film critic magazine in the world?!?! come on! and when they used the words 'sexy', 'erotic' and 'maxim' together, i jus wana LOL.
the use of classical opera for the score was spot-on. it dramatises the scenes and is perfect for the film's upper-Brit-class setting. the settings had "upper-class" written all over: an apartment with full ceiling-to-floor gasses over-lookin a river, a palace with books shelved to the brim of the ceiling, a smurk accent.
i love the film. wat seems like a run-of-the-mill, up-the-social-ladder seductive thriller is given elegance and wit with its flirtatious script and believable performances. how luck is such a huge part of the show and how the cast sizzles. how WA's nuroses werent lost even when it's not one of his usual neurotic/dialogue-filled classic. wit is still written all over it and i cant wait for his next dabble into the unknown(for him).
Amores Perros(Love's a bitch)
i dun think it satisfied me much. it promised "they are forced to discover that love is pain, and forgiveness, and ultimately, redemption", but i didnt get it. it's a meditative take on 3 lives inter-woven into a car crash. gritty. and there's one too many sight of dogs: dogs fighting, dogs whining in pain, dogs drenched with blood, dead dogs being carried around. i wonder if this film got into any trouble with the animal associations cos it was too gritty a sight!
i watched it cos it was nominated for a Bets Foreign Language Film at the Oscars, and because it has Gael Garcia Bernal. perhaps it's the length (148 mins) or the fleet 2nd and third story, but i wasnt really impressed. i love the grittiness thou. and the idea of inter-woven lives. the eventful car-crash was a terrific scene, which probably inspired one of ALIAS' cliffhanging season finale(which also had a surprising car crash).
ar. tired. perhaps am not used to bloggin long entries nowadays. next up: Mrs Henderson Presents(Judi Dench!!!) and Marc Forster's Stay.
ciao.

11:04 am - career high
|
i saw Desmond Xu Zhen Rong and the I Not Stupid2 actor( the ah-beng) at work today!
it's so funny cos at first, i cant recognise if it's XZR cos he was standing in a weird un-glam posture. and he was at the tv, with the Ah-Beng(AB) hidden by the tv. he was carryin a huge kiddy-palace bag, which was another reason it cant be him. then when he finally looked up then i knew IT'S HIM!
and it was more funny when AB emerged from behind the tv la. cos all me and my colleague have been seeing is the I Not Stupid2 show on replay. so much so tt we can memorise the lines la. so when i saw him i cant help but LOL! it's as if he emerged from the tv la.
he bought Final Fantasy 7 dvd. i was tryin not to giggle when he was payin up. haha. he was v friendly la. i explained the reward card thingie to him(w/o LOL) and he said no need la. den my niang-niang, in her usual looks-as-if-she's-fierce manner, told him tt it's a code 1 and it'll trigger the alarm, den he gave a half-laugh OK. haha...i dunno how my NN can remain so straight-faced(she says she's seen "MANY" stars in her shop) but i jus cracked when i saw her talkin to him la....haha...
den when they left (and triggered the alarm), XZR waved bye!!!
dammit! too bad i nv bring camera!!!
wahahah....definitely a career high for a boring Sunday. =)
