OK guys. I'm going to treat myself, come pay day, but I can't decide what to actually get.
THIS or THESE!
Laptop (not necessarily the one linked - needs more research) Pros: ~ I've wanted one for ages; ~ It'd come in handy for travelling (my ickle DVD player whirs very loudly, and just looks a bit pathetic next to everyone else on the train with lovely shiny laptops!); ~ Pretty! ~ Surfing the net, sitting on the couch! ~ My current PC is a desktop, and is about four and a half years old.
Cons: ~ It could be anywhere from a bit more expensive to much more expensive than the shoes, once all the extras have been chosen; ~ I have a pretty decent functioning desktop already that's only four and a half years old (I'm not sure if that's old for a PC or not!).
Shoes Pros: ~ Pretty! ~ I'll make people so jealous! ~ Cheaper than the laptop.
Cons: ~ OH, THE GUILT! I've never spent that much on a pair of shoes in my life, and the thought of it makes me break out into a sweat! It's SUCH an extravagance. At least most people would agree that a laptop is worth a few hundred. Few people would say that about a pair of shoes. ~ 9cm heels. I think I've established that I'm not very good at wearing heels any more. ~ Slingbacks and me haven't exactly gotten on in the past. ~ Seriously guys, the guilt!
Thoughts? Comments? Opinions? Admonitions for even considering spending that much on a pair of shoes?

I'm going to say something that may be a bit controversial. OK, here goes.
( Controversy! )
Anyway, in other news, I don't really have any. My life has been toddling along at a relatively boring pace, I'm afraid. And now I'm getting into exam mode, so I'll have even less to write about in the coming months. I did just book my flights home for a weekend in May, which was initially going to be a post-exam relaxing weekend, but seems to have turned into a post-exam blow-out because I'm now going to a 30th birthday party, and on a pub crawl with my sisters! Then the following weekend, my mum's coming down and we're going to see Oliver! I can't believe that it's less than two months away now, considering we purchased the tickets over a year and a half in advance. Yay!
I think I'll also being doing a bit of travelling in May and June, to a couple of conferences in Bermuda and Brussels. I'd be happy if I get to go to the one in Brussels. I really like it there, and I'd make a real effort to get out and see some of the city (I tend to be in meeting rooms the whole time).
And with that, I'll sign off for another couple of months. Bu-bye!

I'm a bit surprised I scored so high on the sci-fi/comics section, but I suppose that's down to my TV habits, rather than my reading habits. But I predicted correctly that I'd score highest on the bottom section!

You know, when you haven't written in here for a while, it's difficult to know what to say. Not because a ton of stuff has happened, but because I feel like it's expected that a ton of stuff has happened. Really, it hasn't. I was sick for much of Christmas and new year, which is always fun. After that, I went back to work and that and studying has pretty much been it. I lost a lot of studying time when I was sick, then suddenly I only had a couple of weeks till my tutorial and I was really behind. I'm on track now, but it was stress central for a while there.
I'm going home for a long weekend on Thursday for my birthday, which I'm looking forward to. Not least because I'm only in work for two days this week and two days next week.
I also wanted to say that I really like this meme that's spread where you offer a homemade gift for the first five people to reply, as long as they make the same offer on their blog. I'd participate myself, but I have no craft skills whatsoever. I'd love to see what people received/sent so that I can live vicariously through you all.
Also, this message was written on my iPhone. I heart my iPhone! So if there are any mistakes in this post, it's because I'm still learning how to use it! I think there's stuff after this paragraph, but I can't figure out how to delete it! Suffice it to say that the post ends HERE! ;)

10:09 am - Harry: A History
|
You should all go out and buy the book Harry: A History by Melissa Anelli. It's a book recounting the experiences of Melissa, the webmistress of the Harry Potter website The Leaky Cauldron, within the Harry Potter fandom, as well as study on the Harry Potter phenomenon as a whole. I got it for Christmas (after asking for it specifically), and haven't been able to put it down.
Admittedly, it's most interesting to people involved or interested in the Harry Potter fandom, but a lot of the book resonated with me due to my experiences on the WD. The book talks about specific flame wars on HP forums (I'm sure we can all identify similar arguments on the WD!), how real life friends and family can't understand what you do on the internet all day, making good online friends, even meeting up with them, keeping online journals, etc.
But it's also an interesting book about everything Harry Potter, from the day JK Rowling first thought of the story to the release parties and reactions to Deathly Hallows, with exlcusive interviews with JK Rowling and many people who play pivotal roles in the Harry Potter book and movie world. There's also an interesting chapter which talks about the time Melissa interviewed Laura Mallory, the most prominent anti-HP campaigner in the States, which just made me go WTF!
Go buy it now! Especially Amy, Caz and Crystal! :P

4:06 pm - Since I'm not posting anything else (stolen from Amy)

Put your MP3 player (or whatever) on shuffle, and write down the first line of the first twenty songs. Post the poem that results. The first line of the twenty-first is the title.
Now, Look At All The Lonely People
Sometimes you walk by the good ones, You move like I want to. Asked the girl what she wanted to be. Psycho therapy! Psycho therapy!
A few stolen moments is all that we share. Do you want to go back to the way we were? Why dont you fool me, feed me, say you need me? You make me dizzy, running circles in my head!
Ernold Same awoke from the same dream Don't want to hang around anyone today. I hear your name whispered on the wind. When I look back, boy, I must have been green!
Maybe it would be fun to get a new opinion, Baby, baby, baby, you are my voodoo child! Our little secret might just be the kind of thing that you can't hide, I walk along the city streets.
This thing called love, I just can't handle it. Oh yeah, I tell you something, Porcelain. Oh Miss Elphaba, the things one hears these days!
-----------------------------------------------------------------
A modern classic, I'm sure you'll agree.

I thought that some people might be interested in this article about a West End special of The Weakest Link, which has a host of stars of the West End on the show. It airs on Hogmanay at 8pm.

3:47 pm - Do You Know Your Hallelujiahs?
|
Here is a BBC quiz to see if you can match the artist singing to each version of Leonard Cohen's song Hallelujiah. I got 5 out of 8 - not excellent, but respectable nonetheless, considering I hadn't heard most of the versions.
For those not in the know, the reason for the quiz is because Alexandra Burke, the winner of the X Factor, is releasing this song as her debut single.
