Just like living on the slopes of Mount Doom It's boiling here, although it's cooled down since mum is no longer cooking. It's just so stuffy. Partly due to the smoke that lingers like a thin veil all through the house, and I think, partly due to the fact that it's always so warm, even with the heating off. We always complain about Rat's mum's house because she insists on having it so warm, but this is so much worse. I can't even escape here.
The phone problem is slowly being sorted out. I really should do a massive update about it, but I can't remember how I left off. And I think, rather than tempt fate, I'll wait until it's over and then write a post explaining everything from the beginning. But as a brief summary, I am so totally glad I activated BT 1571 last week. Already twice it has proved it's worth. Not bad for a free service.
Peter has suggested that I might go out for a drink with him (and Brian) later. Something I forgot to mention to Rat on our ages long phonecall. I suspect I will go out. It'll get me out of the house. A pub would probably be less overwhelming in atmosphere. And Peter is working tomorrow night so it'll give me the chance to spend time with him.
Everyone has already been complaining that "I never stop" with regards to my gift of the gab. What do they expect when they don't see me for absolutely months and rarely call me, and when they do don't leave me much chance to speak?1. Even my brother had a little dig at me at the dinner table so I went into a fake sulk. He then apologised, at the same time pointing out how he helped me move and hired a van, etc, etc. So I had to give in and be nice. He did give me a lift back from the station afterall.
There was going to be a different point to that last paragraph, but I lost it through listening and talking to dad. Now he insists on never stopping.
I managed to read lots of Lord of the Rings on the train. I'm not sure if this is my fourth or fifth attempt at reading it. Well, attempt is not the right word, except that I only read it half way through the first time. I'm now on book two (which, to the uninformed, is not The Two Towers), and the Council of Elrond is much underway. I remember from one of the extra discs on TTT:EE that someones said how this is the most wordy chapter and possibly the worst. I love it! I love hearing how everyone has managed to find their way to Rivendell just in time for the arrival of the ring (or just after in the case of Boromir). I guess I just love wordy books, hence my liking of Stephen King and Anne Rice.
On the train I'd managed to get a table seat. Until Newport at least. Then some people came and told me that the seats were reserved. I pointed out that there was no label on the seat saying reserved and they offered to show me their tickets. To be honest I didn't feel like arguing and I didn't really need the table seat, but I did feel a little put out. Especially when, trying to pack my bag again, the woman pointed out they had four seats not two. I'm moving dammit! It's just taking a while.
The train was perfectly on time though. Perhaps the first time ever in the history of my life at Cardiff it arrived exactly when it was meant to. The train to Cardiff though was a hassle. I'd had to catch two trains (for a total of two stops) because the one I caught from home wasn't going through Cardiff Central. Then I was waiting at the station when they announced that the Barry Island train would be arriving shortly on platform three. I was waiting on platform two for the Penarth train. Both go via Cardiff Central and so both would be fine to catch. I went down the stairs to platform three and had barely arrived when I looked up and saw that the Barry Island train was now delayed and would be arriving after the Penarth train, so I had to walk all the way back to the other platform. Fortunately, I was still there in plenty of time to catch the Birmingham train.
Oh yes, I finally got my birthday/Christmas present from my brother. £50 cheque!!! It can't be cashed until the end of the month, but how marvelous. That will certainly pay for the £35 train ticket.
I think that's about all for now. I might find more to say later. But I feel I might just do some support, and then read more Lord of the Rings. I'd like to get through Moria at least by Tuesday.
1. Believe it or not, although I want mobile phones, I don't really like talking on the phone. Sure, I'll spend ages talking to Rat on the phone when we're apart, because I miss talking to him, but catching up with my parents on the phone is not fun.

Interesting, exciting evening. Peter and I have decided to go to the pub on another night. So instead I've been sat doing a puzzle with my mother. It's been quite fun. It's one of those few activities that we can partake in together, not argue about, and enjoy doing. Although she's left me doing one of the hardest bits! It's quite a difficult jigsaw. Dad bought her this fold up thing for keeping the puzzle in whilst in progress, and it came with two puzzles too. I really like the look of the other one, but I doubt this one will be finished before I leave. Oh, I've also been sipping at a brandy cream liquor, a little like Baileys. Not too bad. And eating twiglets and Christmas cake. There goes my new year diet. ;) |
