I have arrived back in Blantyre, after lecturing at Zomba Theological College from Tuesday to Thursday. One of the purposes of our trip to Africa was, I suppose, to help us determine whether we are called to overseas missionary work, but I also hoped that this stint of lecturing would help me determine whether I am suited to theological education. Well, I loved it, and it went really well.
The students were really attentive, and asked some searching questions. One student commented after my talk on Genesis 1 – 3 that he found my talk most refreshing, and really appreciated my discussion of homosexuality. He said that as an African Christian he couldn't understand how he could have been reading the Bible so wrongly, since Western Christians were telling him that homosexuality was OK. Well, I found that response very encouraging, and assured him that some Westerners still do take the Bible at face value.
I also had a surprise lecture to give on Thursday morning. As we were finishing morning tea, Dr Silas Ncozana asked me to speak to his Practical Theology class. So I talked about the state of Christianity in Australia, the nature of the Presbyterian Church of Victoria, and the challenges facing it.
Tonight a few of us will be speaking at a high school in Blantyre, and I will be giving a gospel message from Zechariah 3:1-5. Please pray for me.
