3:27PM - What does it mean to profess the Christian religion?

Chapter 10 of the Westminster Confession of Faith says: Much less can men, not professing the Christian religion, be saved in any other way whatsoever, be they never so diligent to frame their lives according to the light of nature, and the laws of that religion they do profess.

This raises a number of questions in my mind. Is "the Christian religion" the same as Christianity? Is "professing the Christian religion" the same as being a Christian? Is being a Christian the same as following Jesus? What about all those Messianic Jews and emerging church types who don't claim to be Christian?

Does a person need to be baptized in order to profess the Christian religion? What about church membership? Did the Westminster divines believe that outside the church there is no salvation?

And does the fact that I ask so many questions mean that I'm postmodern?
