10:12AM - Readings for Holy Week #2
This passage is quoted in full in Matthew 12:18-20. Interestingly, the action which is said to fulfil this prophecy involves Jesus telling his followers not to make him known. Most English versions have "discouraged" at the end of the third last line, but the word used in my Hebrew Bible is definitely "run", which I have interpreted as "run away".
Here is my servant, whom I support,
My chosen one, in whom my soul delights.
I have placed my Spirit upon him,
He will bring forth justice to the nations.
He will not cry out or lift up his voice,
Nor will he cause his voice to be heard in the street.
He will not break the crushed stalk,
Nor extinguish the dim wick.
He will bring forth justice faithfully.
He will not grow dim or run away,
Until he has established justice in the earth
And the coastlands await his law.
