I have an Old Testament exam tonight – should I be thankful for that? Well, I am thankful for the privilege of studying theology, and especially of being able to learn Hebrew. I'm thankful of what I've learned so far, and for the insights in Scripture that knowledge of the original language affords me.
And I'm thankful for the Old Testament, and all it tells me of God's saving, sovereign power. I'm thankful for the way in which it points to the Lord Jesus Christ, my Teacher, Redeemer and High Priest. I'm thankful for the saints in the Old Testament, members of the Church Triumphant, and for the example of piety they have left for us. I'm thankful for the Jewish people, and for the way God preserved them so that Messiah could be born.
And I'm thankful for Old Testament studies, for my lecturer, and for those whom God has raised up to write commentaries and journal articles to help me better understand the Bible. I'm thankful that God is teaching his Church, and I'm thankful that the Holy Spirit leads us into all truth.
Thank you, Lord.
