Should Christians own a car? The answer to this may seem rather obvious to some, but it does raise two important issues.
Firstly, it relates to the issue of Christians being in the world. Tempting as it might be at times, opting out of society is never an option for the Christian. If we all lived on a commune, then we might not need cars, but that would mean we would be taken out of the world – which, according to John 17:15, is not what Jesus wants.
Secondly, it reminds us that there is a difference between what we want and what we need. Are cars necessities or luxuries? This will obviously depend on an individual's circumstances, but although we probably all think that we need a car, perhaps the question deserves more consideration than it is usually given. And yet I'm sure there are many people who regard a second car as a necessity for their family.
