The Third Test against the West Indies starts in Adelaide tomorrow, and Michael Clarke's omission made me think about how many good cricketers have been dumped from the Australian team in recent years - enough, in fact, to make a very decent Test Discard XI. There is no wicketkeeper eligible, so Damien Martyn would have to do the glove-work. But here goes:
Greg Blewett – 46 matches, 2552 runs @ 34.02
Matthew Elliott – 21 tests, 1172 runs @ 33.48
Damien Martyn (wk) – 61 tests, 4125 runs @ 47.96
Darren Lehmann (c) – 27 tests, 1798 runs @ 44.95
Michael Clarke – 20 tests, 1072 runs @ 39.96
Simon Katich – 23 tests, 1260 runs @ 36.00
Michael Bevan – 18 tests, 785 runs @ 29.07, 29 wickets @ 24.24
Andy Bichel – 19 tests, 58 wickets @ 32.24
Jason Gillespie – 69 tests, 251 wickets @ 26.61
Nathan Hauritz – 1 test, 5 wickets @ 20.60
Michael Kasprowicz – 35 tests, 106 wickets @ 32.30
12th man: Martin Love – 5 tests, 233 runs @ 46.60
