Saturday could well have been a significant day in Australian politics. Kim Beazley addressed the Australian Christian Lobby, and spoke of his Christian faith. This is apparently the first time in 25 years of politics that he's spoken publicly about it, but he said that in the post-September 11 world, "when religion is at the centre of public fears of terrorism, we must be able to challenge the ugly, violent distortions of genuine faith."
A couple of weeks ago I heard Brigadier Jim Wallace speak. He's the head of the ACL, and said that he wants to convince Beazley that Labor can still regain much of the Christian vote. Wallace doesn't want Australia to end up like the US, where the Christian lobby is so tied to one particular party as to weaken it dramatically.
Is it time to vote Labor?
Today is Reformation Day, and tomorrow is Melbourne Cup Day. So, since Strasbourg was one of of the most important cities in the Reformation, my money's on him in the Cup.
Metaphorically speaking, of course.
