Yesterday I discussed being baptised in the Red Sea, which is that to which 1 Corinthians 10:2 alludes, but I said that wasn't the whole story. In one sense, the promised land is still future for us, but in another sense we already possess it. Paul says in Ephesians 2:6 that right now Christians are seated with Christ in the heavenly places.
In this sense we have been baptised in the River Jordan - perhaps it's no coincidence that this was where John started baptising. We already enjoy the land of milk and honey. But the Israelites still had their battles to face in Canaan. L. E. Maxwell calls it the land of fruit and fight – that seems to me to be a pretty fair description of the Christian life.
But this time I'm hard pressed to find an appropriate song...
