9:09PM - Paradise Lost #8

In Book IV of Paradise Lost we are introduced to Adam and Eve. The excerpt concludes with a famous phrase, which contains an element of truth, but which has possibly also led to much grief. We do need to affirm distinct gender roles, and there is a sense in which the Man is oriented to the work God calls him to do, while the Woman is oriented to Man, to help him do do this work. Nevertheless, they are still equal, and are both individually accountable to God. To talk, therefore, about Eve being formed "for God in him" is erroneous and unhelpful...

Two of far nobler shape erect and tall,
Godlike erect, with native Honour clad
In naked Majesty seemed Lords of all,
And worthy seemed, for in their looks Divine
The image of their glorious Maker shone,
Truth, Wisdom, Sanctitude severe and pure,
Severe, but in true filial freedom placed;
Whence true authority in men; though both
Not equal, as their sex not equal seemed;
For contemplation he and valour formed,
For softness she and sweet attractive Grace,
He for God only, she for God in him...
