Satan has decided to leave hell to wage his war against the human race, but his path is blocked by Death and Sin, who guard the gates of hell. Satan convinces them to let him through, by speaking to them as follows:
There ye shall be fed and filled
Immeasurably, all things shall be your prey.
He ceased, for both seemed highly pleased, and Death
Grinned horrible a ghastly smile, to hear
His famine should be filled, and blest his mawe
Destined to that good hour...
