Last night I also saw a preview of M. Night Shyamalan's new film "The Village". He's the guy who wrote and directed "Signs" (which I thought was excellent - a wonderful comment on Providence) and this looked really good.
It's about a village that lies next to a forest in which reside strange creatures. These creatures were not depicted in the preview, and as a result I thought that the movie really looked worth seeing. But now I hear that the creatures are in the film after all, and suddenly I've lost interest...
This illustrates, I suppose, an important principle in film-making. Great films - especially great horror films - rely on ambiguity and adumbration. A faceless, nameless evil is much more terrifying than one identified and named. Better the devil you know, or something like that.
Even the phrase 'nameless terror' sends a thrill up and down my spine.
Some of you may be interested in my essay topics for this semester at Theological College. I'll be examing the significance of Princeton Seminary in the 19th century, getting my head around the unity of the book of Isaiah, and figuring out the future of Israel according to Romans 9 - 11. I'm also going to be reviewing Don Carson's book "The Cross and Christian Ministry"...
