3:36PM - Truth is not a Function of Time

I have recently been re-reading Lord of the Rings (in preparation for December 26!) and came across this wonderful coversation:

Aragorn and Eomer have just met, and Eomer says, "It is hard to be sure of anything among so many marvels. The world is grown all strange... How shall a man judge what to do in such times?" Listen to Aragorn's reply: "As he has ever judged. Good and ill have not changed since yesteryear..."

This is something our society badly needs to take on board. In an age of relativism and pluralism, we need to remember that some things do not change. As my brother says, "truth is not a function of time." Neither is morality. They do not vary as the years roll on.

Sometimes you hear people justify what they do or what they say by appealing to the fact that this is the 21st century. Next time you hear that, refer them to Aragorn.
