1. Rembrandt - I was privileged to see some of his paintings in Amsterdam. They were all quite astounding. His depiction of Peter's Denial moved me to tears.
2. Vermeer - if Rembrandt made me weep, then Vermeer made me laugh. A contented, joyous, satisfying laugh.
3. Breughel - the detail, the humour and the wisdom of his paintings are all wonderful to behold.
4. Escher - the mathematician's artist. What more can I say?
5. Friedrich - rather strange, but hauntingly beautiful. I got to see some of his paintings in Berlin.
6. Michaelangelo - some of the faces on the Sistene Chapel are simply amazing. Methinks he has produced some of the best depictions of Old Testament prophets the world has seen.
7. Mondrian - meticulous, serene, perfectionistic. Do you notice a prevalence of Dutch artists?
8. Van Gogh - for years I didn't like him all that much, but there's no denying the talent there.
9. Raphael - some of his portraits are simply exquisite.
10. Monet - to my mind, the best of the French impressionists. His earlier paintings are better.
