11:40PM - KVPUG Gets a chatoom!

KVPUG this morning finally got something which I felt was required for a very long time now - Its very own chatroom!

It was nice to see dobbs being the first one to come and join the room after I created it only 5 minutes before!

9:58PM - Bye bye Zire72

I decided to sell off my Zire72 this evening. Yes... it's been only 3 days or so since I bought it, but I have to admit that though it was quite a nice PDA, what with the camera and all, it just wasn't me.

I miss the power and speed of the T3...

Managed to find a buyer for it at RM1100. No loss for me. Now... as I understand it, the T3 is about to drop in price... just when will that be. Hopefully soon.

12:56AM - Function : Silverbird Berhad

Function was in Shangri-La KL for Silverbird Bhd. Met the Group MD Dato Jackson Tan and his wife. Nice man, very unassuming and part China-man too. Tonight's function had Joanne Yeoh (The violin player), a string quartet and also Ning Baizura. It was a relatively formal function since Silverbird was celebrating the fact that they are now moving from the 2nd board to the main board on KLSE.

Ning was pretty much in form tonight, belting out some popular numbers. Just before the show, I dared her to try a Whitney Houston song and she took me up on my dare - singing "Do it on my own". She's improved so much, and managed the song very well. She also belted out Kelly Clarkson's "A moment like this" as well. Good to see her back to her old natural form again...

Function ended at 11:00pm.

Footnote: Dato Tan invited me over to his new BreadCity, his spanking new bread factory which had cost him RM100 million to build. Apparently he's getting set to launch this new factory cum bread museum soon - after all, Silverbird recently took over the manufacturing and sales of High5 bread.

1:52AM - Function - Fuji Xerox Malaysia

Location - KLGCC Poolside
Agent - Buddies

Nice function, though I felt that holding it by the poolside presented some logistical problems... the stage was too far away for anyone to see, and the sound system had such a bad delay...

All in all in was quite a good function, and I enjoyed myself there as well... The free flow of beer and wine helped too, I suppose.

8:23PM - Streamyx log - Day Two

Day two with Streamyx, and I've downloaded my first DivX show, thanks to dobbs. What else, but Star Trek: Enterprise!!! I experienced an incredible rate of 96.2kbps this afternoon, smooth as anything...

Now... let's get to work on BitTorrent...

1:32AM - Streamyx is finally here!

Yep, finally got the connection after such a long wait for it to arrive.... all I can say is that it was worth it. The speed is incredible, and downloading stuff has never been more pleasurable than now... downloading MP3s at an average of 2 to 3 minutes is so much better than the old 30 to 40 minute days.

1:48AM - Back to work...

The wife went for a meeting today. She's so excited about it as well, since this will be the first time she's meeting up with the other members of her crew. Yes, she's going back flying again. This time it'll be with AirAsia,

It'll be nice to have her fly again and out of the house (shhh), but what I really appreciate most is the fact that she's getting back some self-confidence as well. After all, we're all not young anymore and getting acceptance is probably one of the best natural "high"s one can receive...

12:53PM - Long day

Is it just me or has traffic suddenly gone crazy nowadays. It's too much, I tell you. Even when I send my son to school as early as 6:15am, it's already jammed packed on the roads. I have to get up as early as 5:30am just to be able to make it to his school or else I can forget about ever sending him on time.

Had a FormReader demo this morning at UPM this morning. Met Louis from SDB and we went together. It was a great demo, since the Dean and all the other lecturers were there. It's demos like this one that make the pitching of FormReader great. This lead looks promising. If all goes well, it might look like a great quarter is in store...

I'm also looking into getting a new notebook or PC for myself. The old horse at home has lasted long enough and age is beginning to show on it, though it's never ever failed me... Paying a trip to Low Yat has been quite an eye opener since PCs are so darn cheap nowadays. Prices for a Pentium 4 system start from as low as RM1,500. Notebooks (not Centrino) start from as low as RM3,300 for a decent one... *sigh* it's tough trying to make decisions like these...

Anyway, the DVDs are back! After a hiatus of almost a month due to the strict enforcement, the good old 5's and 9's are being displayed once again. I was really missing my weekly dose of movies but it looks like it's movie time! Bought "Underworld" (9) and few older movies like X-Men2 and even Star Trek:Nemesis. Won't have much time to watch them, though. The next few days will be totally hectic ones with functions almost every night right through till Chinese New Year.

11:19AM - First Day Of School...

Well, it's back again to the old "grind" - first day of school. Woke up early this morning - at 5:30am no less! Got Calvin ready and sent him off. The traffic condition was really bad, even at 6:25am. The traffic light outside the house is back online again, and that's bad news, since it doesn't serve any purpose than to slow down the stream of traffic that would otherwise flow so much faster without it...

Susan's down with the flu and I think I'm getting it as well. Downed half a box of orange juice, which equals about almost one litre... *sniff*

11:26PM - Function - Tokyo Ferrite

This was my first function with Benson Lee, the guy who used to work with Peter Frankfort.

Held at Grand Blue Wave over in Shah Alam, the crowd was 97% Malay, production workers. Only the top brass were Japanese and a few admin staff being Chinese.

Really boring function with nothing to do, honestly. The entertainment was a four piece band called D'Kaz, and they couldn't get the crowd going either... my part? Just do the lucky draws... easy huh?

Current mood: Dissatisfied

3:19AM - MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Hey, another year, another Christmas goes by. As usual, I'm here in Taiping for Susan's granny's memorial, this year a little noisier than ever with Steven's family also being around. Shereen's family couldn't make it since she is working right through till the New Year with Air Asia.

Also, Susan's aunt came down to Taiping in the afternoon and we all had dinner.

Spoke to Mother this morning and she again expressed her loneliness this time of the year. Also, my cousin Jerry, whom I haven't seen for the past 30 years made a trip back to Penang from London to celebrate the Christmas holidays with Tua Ee. That would've been an extremely pleasant surprise for her. Apparently the rest of the brothers and sisters are coming up from KL to celebrate as well.

3:19AM - On the road again...

Drove back from Taiping today, started the journey at about 4.00 pm or so and arrived in KL about 3 hours later - I took it a little slow today due to the fact that there was fair warning about roadblocks over at Tapah and also at Bukit Beruntung. The warnings were sent by SMS by Freddy since he started his journey about an hour earlier than I did.

Strange thing was, when I got to those two exits, there was no roadblock at all. Susan mentioned that the Police were probably smarter than we thought and could have moved the blocks somewhere else. After all, motorists from the other direction would have given warnings already and their cover would be blown within half and hour or so.

This led me to wonder as to why the Police always set up their roadblocks or speedtraps in the same spot all the time. Could it be because those were the dangerous spots or are they just plain ignorant to the fact that most motorists who ply the NS Highway would have probably known where they normally are?

Anyway... it feels great to be home again, and it looks like the year is fast coming to an end... a retrospective of the year will follow soon.

2:08PM - In Taiping

Drove up to Taiping earlier this afternoon. It was a pretty good drive, taking only about 2 hours or so only. It's been some time since I made a visit here, the last time was just before Father's passing sometime in June.

Well, Taiping is Taiping. Still as slow as ever... I may not update the journal that often, but if I do, it'll probably be through AvantGo just like Palmdoc who's in Penang, by the way...

3:11AM - It's that time of the year again...

...when I make my way up to Taiping with the rest of the family to Susan's hometown. Every year, we "celebrate" Christmas in a different way. You see, Susan's granny passed away on Christmas Day, and being a Catholic herself, it was quite a big deal. Anyway, I remember during her wake, there were so many signs of her being truly blessed.

There's this circular signboard outside Susan's house (her place is actually an old pre-war shoplot) that's lighted by two flourescent tubes inside it. Somehow, one of the tubes fell and this created a cross which could be seen very clearly...

Truly blessed and truly missed by all...

3:01AM - IKEA Again?!

Just popped in to IKEA again tonight. It's nice to shop during a weekday since the crowds are not there. Bought a few small items including a nice small flowerpot which now holds all my pens and stationery (hah... ) and also some cable organisers. Susan and I saw some nice sofas and chairs which I am thinking of targeting as our next purchase...

2:58AM - Function - Janssen Cilag

Held at Kit Kat club (The old Riva's) at Sheraton Imperial, this is the 2nd time I'm doing their function for them. The first was two years ago. They wanted me back last year, but I was already booked with Class Act then. Again, HiVolt was the event manager.

I was a little late for the event due to the fact that Susan came back a little late. Still, I managed to get there just in time for the starting.

Lots of lucky draws and games tonight including "Who Am I?", Cracker Surprise and Junkyard Wars. Everyone was pretty decent, and they had a lot of nice looking ladies there too (ahem). Met an old friend from my childhood days as well, Jeffrey Chew (not Datuk) from Western Gardens. Apparently he's now working with Hong Leong Bank.

All in all, it was a good party, but pity they had to leave early since Monday was a working day for them.

Current mood: awake

1:53AM - How da heck do you shellac properly?!

I tried to shellac some shelves I bought from IKEA today. Ended up making a mess... If I remember correctly, you gotta do it fast and quick without going over the same area twice until that layer is dried. Ah well, I suppose you have to pay SOMETHING in order to learn the thing correctly...

7:08PM - Function - SAP Thank you dinner

SAP held their function at the Marquis, Carcosa Sri Negara tonight. It was such a straightforward function - No games or lucky draws, but pretty good entertainment. There was a jazz band, a 10 piece complete with strings and all, and also Buddy Loren. It was nice to see Buddy again after his operation on his joints which left him out of action for six weeks. Class Act was the event Manager

The crowd comprised of SAP clients and some SAP big honchos including Hans-Peter Klaey, the President and CEO of SAP Asia Pacific. Sounds very grand doesn't it. Problem was, because of the diversity of the crowd, being from all different companies, and the fact that the function started late, people left as soon as makan was over and that left less than half the original number by the time Buddy Loren came on. Not only that, they were one of the most difficult to work on, and that left Buddy somewhat in a vacuum... sad.

Function ended at 9:40pm. It was a classy function, but poor planning (it was a weekday night) saw a lot of people just coming for the free food.

7:08PM - Function - Dell Client Technology Update & Bowling Tournament

First time working with Terra. Nice people. The whole afternoon was pretty fun with all the Dell clients battling it out on the bowling alley at Kiara Equastrian & Country Club. Sadly the function was marred by a wrong calling from the judges for the results, which resulted in the 2nd placing becoming first and vice-versa...
