Interview
If you think your life is crazy, try living in Damian Kulash's shoes. Amidst a whirlwind tour supporting OK Go's self-titled debut disc and after a wild day of running from one interview to the next, the tall and lanky frontman of the Chicago-based pop-rock band found a minute to talk with Slant Magazine immediately before his next sound check. Despite suffering with an annoying cold ("I've had it all week, my voice is fucked, but there's nothing I can do about it."), Damian was in good spirits, highly energized and considerately thoughtful during our abbreviated discussion.

SLANT MAGAZINE: How crazy is it these days?

DAMIAN KULASH: It's real crazy. We were just here in New York City less than a week ago, then we were in Toronto and now we're back again. It's been hectic--today, especially. I've been feeling like shit and our schedule's kind of jammed up--been running fast all day. But we'd rather be crazed than bored, so this is fine.

SLANT: OK Go has been around since 1998. Does it bother you that you're not widely known yet?

DK: No, not at all. Of course we want people to listen to our music, buy our records, come to our shows--the whole shebang. And Capitol Records is fully behind us, spending money and promoting the band, so we know it's gonna happen. But we also want to continue to do this for a long time and, in our opinion, it's good to discover our fans and have them gradually discover us, as opposed to having our music constantly shoved down their throats and risk over-exposure. The slower things happen, the better.

SLANT: The band has been known to do live covers, be it Tommy James' "Crimson and Clover" or Toto's "Hold The Line." Do they always work?

DK: We're pretty selective about the covers we do but we have screwed them up from time to time. We've done some that have made me wince and left me feeling like a total ass afterwards. I've always wanted to perform Aerosmith's "Sweet Emotion"--I love the bass line in that song. But we can't seem to make anything good out of it. It's important to know your limitations and we know we can't pull it off. But usually the covers go off pretty well.

SLANT: Your live show is loose and wild you're usually careening all over the place. Have you ever fallen off the stage?
DK: No, not exactly. I have fallen into the drum set before. The stage was just too small to contain me and I wasn't having it, so I kept going and ended up crashing into the drums. That was great [laughs]. I love spontaneous stuff like that.

SLANT: Do you ever worry about getting to the point where it stops being fun?

DK: Well, of course I know it's not always going to be as fresh or as new as it is now. But, honestly, I can't ever imagine it not being fun. I hope I'm right about that because we've been together a long while and we're having a great time with this. It's exactly what we want to be doing.

I had a really good birthday despite not doing much or being able to spend it with Emma. I just spent it at home with my family and the rest of the band. As boring as that sounds, I really enjoyed it. Usually I'd hate that, I'd want to go and get wasted or something but I don't get to see my family much now, so it was nice. I think during this whole year, I've only been home 7 or 8 times because we've been touring so much. I really missed being home and seeing my dog, Ella, I think she has had a growth spurt or something I do not remember her being that big.
It was a shame I couldn't see Emma either but she called me to wish me a happy birthday. It’s hard to keep relationships going through just a phone but it will have to do for the time being.

Craig what happened to the run on sentences I bet you were hoping I forgot ahahaha

I have to go catch a plane to see Marieh, adios.

Forget the update I made yesterday. It was pointless I just didn't want to get removed.

I've been sleeping all day because I feel like shit. I have flu or something like it. I always find that when you're sick everything seems to get on top of you and I tend to be very negative when I'm unwell. It kind of frustrates me how our band isn’t really going anywhere right now. For the past 6 months we've just been touring, touring, touring and I don't feel like we've gotten that much out of it. I mean, I enjoy it, it's just very draining sometimes and if you play somewhere new and you don't get a great response, or not that many people show up it kind of feels it's all gone to hell sometimes. its like, why do we bother? We also really need to hurry up with releasing the new single. I don't honestly know why it's taking so long.

I am going to see Marieh in just over a week to teach her the Chic-a-Go-Go dance. At least that’s something to look foreword to.

New Layout, the orange was hurting my eyes.
I need to go sleep bye

I hate having to update when you have absolutely nothing to write about. We finished touring the UK I am glad thats over. We only have a couple dates left to play in Chicago and I think thats all we are doing this month which is good because I want to concentrate on writing new songs.

Hi Craig . This is only so you don't feel bad about losing. Marieh wins sorry. You are still my favorite k bye

I am in the UK right now. I love it here so much. We came here to play three festivals, all of which were amazing experiences. The first was Reading and Leeds which is really one festival, but it is divided so that there are two different groups of bands. One load will play Reading one day, then Leeds the next, and the other group do Leeds first and then Reading after. That is sort of confusing I don't remember which we did first. We played the Radio 1 stage, which I do believe is a British radio station and we were high up on the bill. Not a headliner, but pretty close. I also got to hang out with Meg White which made it a lot more fun.

After that, we had the T on the Fringe festival in Scotland which was awesome. We went back to the UK afterwards to tour and we are still doing that. Emma is not here with me, and I understand completely why not. I know if she had come along she would have hated it, plus I would not have any time to see her and she probably would have felt neglected or something since I am the only person she'd know here anyway. I think we are only here for a few more days though so it will be really nice to be able to go see her.

I think 'Don't Ask Me' is getting released soon. I fucking hope so. This seems to be taking longer than it should be, and it's been so long since we've released anything I hope people don't think we died or got dropped or whatever. I also want people to see the video's because they are really great. I don't know which I like more, probably the orange video, but we will release the other video because that cost money. The other was just made by some guy with a camera and an orange screen, and a bunch of fans that danced in front of it. The only downside to all this is the promotion and the touring which is not all that bad, but I just get homesick after a little while.

This is more of a proper update. One of Craig's band members has a journal now and he is like over-active. He updated 3 times in a row I am jelous I don't know how he does it but whatever. I like his updates. I wish my band would get journals but I know they would just abandon them as soon as I stopped forcing them to update. Plus no-one really knows who my band are so it is pointless.

I have new icons FINALLY, courtesy of Amber. Thankyou ;-* oh and Craig, I REPLIED TO YOUR SENTENCES SEE I DID NOT LIE IT JUST TOOK LONGER THAN I WAS EXPECTING IT TO.

I signed on earlier and the only person online was Tony Lovato and we um spoke brefily he is kind of great. wtf I still need to talk to Meg White.

She needs to update also I will have to remind her or something. Me and the rest of the band have to go to the UK in about 2 weeks so I still have a lot of time to spend with Emma this is great. I don't know there is your update bye.

Where the fuck is everybody? I don't have anything to update about but I haven't updated in a week so I don't want to get kicked out or whatever.
We had a show last night at the Empty Bottle in Chicago which is our favourite venue. We always used to play there before we got signed and it's really near home so we'd play there all the time. It's kind of surreal playing there now because people actually show up and the venue was near full. We have another show in Chicago tonight, which I think Emma is coming too so that should be great. After that we have a month off. A whole month. Well, thats what I was told, but knowing my luck I'm sure it is not going to be a whole month.

Craig, expect those sentences soon. Hi Monica :D

I hate it when I forget our tour schedule. We had a festival to play in Scotland on Wednesday and Thursday. I didn't want Emma to leave my house so I locked her in. Okay maybe I didn't but she didn't seem to want to leave anyway. I was only gone for a couple days and it gave her a chance to get to know Chicago better other than the few places I have gotten around to showing her. Haha I am so stupid. The 'T In The Park' festival was really great. We also played the Witness festival in Ireland yesterday, which was also the second day of the T festival if that makes any sense. So we have been kind of busy, but we don't have anymore shows for about two weeks so I won't have to leave Emma again for a while. That is, if she stays for that long. I hope she does.

Why do the All American Rejects not have journals yet sob.

I don't know why I'm updating but Amber wins because she made me a new layout with a sidebar because I tried doing one and it was fucking awful. Hahaha I showed her it and she was dying.
Anyway, Free is here, we haven't had our ping-pong match yet but I am planning on taking her out for drinks later so she is easy to beat tomorrow can meet Andy 'cause he likes her band a lot.

I have to put the going out and drinking with Amber, Emma and Craig on hold for a while because FREE IS COMING TO SEE ME :D :D :D I am a bit too over excited about it 'cause I have never met her before and she is great and stuff. When she gets here she wants to tell me about gas stations and we are going to have a ping-pong match which she won't win because I am the ping- pong master okay don't let her tell you any different. I am so bored so I hope she turns up soon.
Amber wanted a run on sentence so I gave her one. Good fucking God she is so fast with her replies haha. I replied to Craig's sentences, it's 7 comments long so he will kill me oops. Speaking of which, where the fuck is he?, and Emma too I miss her sob.

We played a show in Chicago last night for Apple, you know that company that make computers but I didn't get any free stuff.

When is Craig going to reply to my long run on sentences i'm sure it's been a week since i posted those. If you're busy i understand it's just that touring gets boring. My band mates are bad company i need stuff to do.
Anyway, Saturday was fun. The gig that night was probably my favorite, other than the opening gig in Nottingham because the first night of tours are always the best and Emma was there so you know. Marieh was late i think she got lost or something but she still made it in time before our set. Me and the rest of the band were in Brighton all day anyway and we rehearsed earlier on in the day, so when we got to the venue I had nothing to do. I needed to clear my head a bit and wanted some fresh air, so I went outside with my guitar, crossed the road and sat on the railings by the beach (which is where this icon is from. i know it's blurry don't hate). By this time the first support act were on and I couldn't really hear what I was playing because they were so loud. Good band though. A few people had realized who I was and gathered round, but i don't think they were paying much attention to what i was playing. I had my photo taken with a couple of them, then Dan came out and was yelling something at me so I followed him back inside.
Marieh was there, I'm guessing that's why I got called in. She was wearing a pink string vest, baggy pants and more bling than Nelly. It was fake though, I'm sure.
We sat and talked for a while, then my band got called on stage. The whole set is kind of a blur because I went drinking with Marieh afterwards :x but I remember doing Women + Men. Which uh is a song we only do live where we try and rap, it's more Tim rapping than me though. I remember looking to the side and seeing Marieh rapping along with us ahah she probably won't admit to it, but she knew all the words.
After the show, I took her to meet Tim and Burleigh since she wanted to meet them. Tim has taken a liking to her but I am too tired to write anymore. Sorry this was long bye.

EDIT: wow i actually got to talk to Emma on AIM i think thats a first. while i'm at it hi emma :-*.

So my band is in the UK, I love it here. Emma is here also which makes it even better. I'm suprised she isn't bored or sick of us yet. She is like our little groupie fan girl, jumping and screaming at every show just to make me feel better if not as many people as I was hoping for showed up. She is so cute.

Where the hell is everybody? It's fucking crazy, none of you people have been on AIM for days but maybe that's because I like to sign on at weird times so I never catch anyone on. Craig, you need to update. Thank you for updating Free, STOP CALLING ME CRAIG-DAMIAN hahaha ;-* I am digging the layout by the way. I'll re-do mine one of these days.

Marieh is coming to our show in Brighton on Saturday and even though I hate performing it, we'll do Women + Men just for her. She is good at curing late night insomnia and we are so ghetto you'd be suprised.
Oh and Avril might be coming to a show too, if she has time but I'm sure she's really busy so I can only hope. Replace your CD >:O how you can live without hearing 'Get Over It' every day is beyond me haha ;).

But I'll be looking out for you in Birmingham tomorrow, it should be fun. I've just had too much to remember lately um yeah we opened for The Bangles which was great because...well it's The fucking Bangles. We flew out to the UK yestersay, and we began the tour in Nottingham last night.
This is mainly for me so I don't forget tour dates )
