I have a cold. Wank. Waking up through the night and then being wide awake from 4.30am with no hope of going back to sleep is also Bad. My nose wasn't too awful first thing so it was mainly the bunged-up-ness and knackeredness, but during the morning the dam suddenly broke and it was Not Pretty.
Tonight I shall go to bed with a nice Lemsip and honey. And maybe put a sneaky shot of Drambuie in it.
Uggghhh.

Out Of Control - Hoobastank |
] |
He's been working for hours, but H has almost finished repairing the fence. He refused to go the concrete panel/professional route (an argument for another time as I just wanted the panels back up), but went for new wooden posts and metposts to delay rotting, and I fear the joins still aren't tight enough to make the fence solid against gales, but it's better than nothing - and how - at least people can't see into our garden now! He's just (hah) got to put the surround for the back gate back and drill a new hole for the lock, but otherwise things are looking so much better. I'm very grateful he's so good at DIY.
Actually, this has turned out to be a small blessing, seeing as the posts needed replacing anyway, and while he's been doing that, I've been tidying up in the garden (weeding, pruning) and cleaning the windows and doors at the back to keep him company. More productive than sitting on the sofa feeling sorry for myself and watching TV, at any rate. I'm now fixing dinner and logging some more CDs so they can go up into the loft and create more space (a project on the To Do List). 1,510 songs logged so far...

The three fence panels at the back of my garden (the ones looking onto the drive where the TARDIS is parked) have blown down. The panels themselves were fine, being new last year; unfortunately the older wooden posts had rotted away. It's interesting that the side adjoining our neighbour's garden, which has concrete posts, is not moving an inch. Same goes for all our other neighbours' fences, which are all concrete-posted as well. Bet they're feeling nice and smug/relieved/sympathetic (delete as appropriate) looking at my poor vandalized fence. The reason we didn't put concrete posts in all the way round is that H put concrete down for the metposts there which currently hold the wooden posts in a few years back, and he thought it would be too difficult to drill down enough to get concrete ones in. I think we'll have to get concrete posts for the back, though. At least there's no concrete to drill out there.
I am safely locked in the house so am not worried about anyone taking advantage of the open back garden to come in here, and am fairly Zen about any stuff being nicked from the side of the house as most of it is ancient junk and easily replaceable. (H's nice bike is locked in the garage.) It's annoying knowing it's so vulnerable, though. H doesn't get back till Sunday evening at least so it'll be a while before the fence can be repaired. And it would be the side with the custom-built back gate built into it, wouldn't it? Bother.

The Bones soundtrack album: not bad, actually. Particularly what I'm listening to right now. Nice thumpy bass. I really liked it when I first heard it (er, probably on Bones), but didn't buy it until yesterday evening. Along with the rest of the soundtrack.
Today seems to have gone by rather fast. Time for bed. And I didn't even get round to the latest HIMYM...

I am currently watching Buffy The Vampire Slayer on TV. Complete with adverts. Why I do this when I have the entire bloody show on DVD is beyond me. Maybe I should get off my arse and put the DVD in myself. But I might miss something!
[doh]
In other news, watched Up today. LOVED IT. And yes, I cried at one point. Even H shed a quiet manly tear. But I was mostly grinning and giggling. Some of the sight gags and in-jokes were absolutely hilarious. And because the sign encouraged us to recycle our 3D glasses (in the handily-placed bin) instead of demanding we hand them in, we decided the best way to recycle them was to take them home and use them for every 3D feature we see at home from now on. By which I mean we walked out with them quite openly in our hands, and no-one challenged us or anything. And quite frankly, for twenty squids, I think we were quite entitled to take them with us. So there.
("Free shower curtain!")
H is playing in Wokingham tonight so I'm downing rather a lot of Wine and being geeky. As you do.

Without You - Breaking Benjamin |
] |
Having put on 5lb over the holiday (could have been worse), I have tried to be good this week and do a ten-minute workout (short but intensive) every night bar Monday, the weekly shop night. Doesn't sound like much, but it's better than zero minutes, which has been the norm for the majority of the last few months. H agrees! Yay! Of course, it's no help being distracted by t'internet on one's way to pick up one's exercise mat (I'm doing Vicious Pilates tonight), but I am going to do some, I promise. My obliques are still aching from Wednesday's VP, and I've been doing Tae-Bo Advanced in between, so lots of sweaty effort expended, I promise.
In other news, it's the weekend (huzzah!) so I shall now do my exercise, eat and get Pished. Have a great one, kiddies.

Too tired/busy to make a proper entry about the weekend yet, but I will. For the moment, suffice it to say I had a great time and am most grateful to Eileen for taking on the hostessing duties as I seriously wonder if I could have done it if I'd gone ahead with the original plan of having it at my house.
Work tomorrow. Not looking forward to the routine of getting up at 6:20am again. At all. Thank goodness I only have to do it for a few weeks before my next chunk of annual leave...

Another lazy and unachieve-y day, although I have been getting myself psyched up for the weekend with some shopping and preparation for the weekend. Heehee. Also made some rather nice Parmesan and herb-crusted pork medallions for supper and am somewhat Pished. Looking forward to seeing some WDers tomorrow!

Already Met You - Superfine |

What is it with me and arachnids at the moment?
I'm driving to work and all of a sudden there's a spider running towards me over the dashboard. I immediately start yelping, "Oh, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck!" in sheer panic and whack the spider with my (fortunately) gloved hand. (I can't imagine what would have happened if I hadn't been wearing gloves.) The car jerks a tiny bit, but fortunately doesn't swerve into a) a ditch or b) oncoming traffic. (Side note: I wonder how many car accidents are caused by arachnophobes enountering spiders en route.) Anyway, of course it drops into the driver footwell. Drive with my heart in my mouth to my local garage, keeping my feet off the floor and on the pedals as little as possible, leeeaaap out of the car and inspect the footwell. The spider's still there, curled up but twitching. Carefully pick it up with my still-gloved fingertips and chuck it out of the car.
Fast-forward to this evening: I was opening a package and as I tipped it upside down to shake out the contents, a spider fell out and landed on the floor. I think I did yelp this time. Then I realized it was a rubber one. Namely, a free inclusion with the items I ordered from a Hallowe'en site. *sigh of relief*
Stupid spiders.

Well, there was definitely pizza tonight. Mainly to celebrate H's first scuba lesson tonight (I did tell him not to eat his entire portion and save a bit for later, but he didn't. Silly man.)
My favourite Tesco demi-sec cava is out of stock. I am bereft. I'm swigging Cordoníu cava instead, but it's brut and deeply disappointing. Oh, well.

You Don't See Me - Keane |

I was sorting through some papers in my "nostalgia" box in the study, and found a load of email correspondence between H and me from back in 1994, shortly before we became an item. Dear lord. (No, I'm not posting samples, although the subject matter was usually music or clubbing.) My email handle was COSMIC AVATAR, even then (back when "avatar" was a relatively unknown word - unless one had knowledge of Hinduism and/or X-Men comics - lo-o-o-o-ong before it became used to describe profile pics and online personae and whatnot and became as common as muck). People kept confusing it with "aviator", natch. (As they did on the WD when I first joined.)
We used to write in ALL CAPS (before netiquette advised otherwise), although H switched to proper case before I did. And I sounded like I was fucking high on drugs. This is because I probably was. I was drinking circa seven cans of Diet Coke a day (and smoking about seven cigarettes, funnily enough) to cope with the unbelievable stress and long hours which comprised my first job at C&W. If anyone ever finds these emails after I'm gone, they're going to think I was a total nutter. Er, yeah. Think.

Got home from work and H had only just got in.
"Shall we order in?" he said, meaning pizza. Which means Herbies, and whenever I order from them, their evil calzone-style garlic bread with cheese has to be included in the order OR ELSE. Cue much drool.
Amazingly, not only did I say, "No," and helped get a rather healthier supper out and under the grill, but I did a Tae-Bo (first time in a couple of weeks) while waiting for it to cook. I think I surprised even myself.
Fortunately I'd had a good day at work (broke the back of month-end reporting a day early!); my answer might have been different if I'd been in need of cheering up...

Love Comes Again - DJ Tiësto |

Unfortunately I have not been well-behaved on the food front so far this weekend. Yesterday evening we had roast pork and deeeee-lishus crackling with roast potatoes, Yorkie puds and veggies. Today, even though I woke up still feeling a bit full from last night, I made a rather large cooked breakfast for us (technically brunch, given that it was 11am): bacon, diced potatoes, mushrooms, grilled tomatoes, scrambled eggs and toast. I also made hotcakes for the first time ever (the recipe made one large, fat one each, which was handy). And now I am really, really full. *burp*
Edit: Oh, boy. H made supper and he used three different kinds of potato: roast, croquette and diced with Mediterranean vegetables. Not that I'm complaining about that, but ooooohhh, the gluttony... *clutches self*

Well, it had to happen eventually.
Now that I have most of the songs I own ripped/downloaded to iTunes, I have decided to put most of the CDs whence they came into storage in the loft to free up some space for DVDs. The trouble is, not all the songs on CD are ripped, but someday there is the chance that I might decide that I MUST HAVE a song I have hitherto ignored or passed over, and it's getting hard to keep track of what I have in general (I have a sneaky suspicion I already owned Sub Sub's Aint No Love (Ain't No Use) before buying the single this week, although I haven't found it yet.) So, I have to grasp the nettle and finally catalogue my CD collection, same way as the DVD one, on a lovely Excel spreadsheet. Unfortunately, the CD collection is rather larger than the DVD one. My DVD collection currently numbers 305. The number of songs on my iTunes general list alone is 2,157.
I may be some time.

You know when you decide to do some investigating to put your mind at rest and you realize that you've just uncovered what may be a great big steaming pile of shite and you and your compadres are now probably in it up to your boots? Yeah. On the positive side, it's been great having House and Fringe back. My TV schedule is looking pretty darned sweet right now.
Really ought to go to bed now as I'm knackered. Having had a really nifty dream the night before, I was hoping for more of the same last night and what did I get? Alligators, blood 'n' guts and work colleagues of whom I am not at all fond. Nightmare! But soon (well, in a couple of weeks), I can have some decent rest as I have now booked all bar one day of my considerable remaining annual leave over October, November and December. Only this time I am planning to do (reasonably) Productive Things with it instead of just hibernating. Oh, yes!
