Saving the Planet with LED Christmas Lights
Christmas is a great time of year when we throw caution to the wind and forget about all our best intentions to not overspend, overeat and all the other over- things we tend to do at this time of year. However, this doesn't mean that we should forget our duty to our planet and trying to be as eco-friendly as possible. After all, you can still overspend on eco-friendly gifts or overeat desserts made from local, fresh products.

One way you can help save the planet is by choosing decorations wisely, reusing your old decorations, to create as little waste as possible and changing your old incandescent lights for newer LED Christmas lights. These lights are much more eco-friendly for the simple reason that they have a much longer life span than other types of Christmas lights. The reason for this is the they use light emitting diodes which do not contain a filament and thus are not as delicate as regular incandescent lights.

Their longer life span means that LED Christmas lights have a lower impact on the environment because they don't need to be changed as often, with most LEDs operating continuously for over 30,000 hours meaning that they can last you a lifetime of Christmases. This means that there are fewer manufacturing operations required and as such less resources are used and there is also less waste. Plus, we must not forget that this will also help you save money as well in the long term.

LED Christmas lights also require less power to run than incandescent bulbs, almost 90% less, which is a significant difference, especially considering that they are much brighter. This will not only save you money on the electric bill but the environment will greatly benefit as well. Due to this low consumption they do not overheat, as with regular bulbs, presenting a maximum temperature oscillation of 1 degree meaning that they remain cool to the touch. Thus they present less of a fire hazard and considering that over 80% of the fires during the holiday season are due to Christmas lights this is no small matter.

LED Christmas lights are also available as solar powered lights which are even more eco-friendly because they only use the power of the sun. Yes, they are supposed to work in the dark but the charge during the day with plenty of power to run all night and even more. Incandescent lights do not work as well in this instance because of their higher power consumption.

In fact, you could consider using another version of LED Christmas lights for home decoration year round, namely rope lights. The latter can be used to great effect by providing accent lighting anywhere in your home and are a more eco-friendly and cost effective solution than traditional lighting systems.

Just by changing to LED Christmas lights this Christmas you can make a difference and help to save our planet. After all, we only have the one and we should start looking after it a little better.
